I didn't want to hijack tadyson's thread found here, so I started a new one.

Will shooting through a window or windshield, especially at an angle, cause much deflection?

I don't know about a standard glass window, but it seems that some deflection will occour from shooting through a windshield at an angle.

Apart from bullet distortion .... a shot normal to plain of glass should only reduce velocity.

Once any angle of incidence comes into play then almost certainly - I'd expect a deviation on exit..... and probably enough to take said bullet off target.

Other input awaited with interest.

Ditto what blades said.

If one gets an opportunity to shoot vehicle glass in a safe manner, I highly recommend it. Same for glass used in doors ( business/home) and business/home building materials.

Chris...

Go ahead , blame me...I'm used to it...

Nope I have been fortunate to be able to do this...in a safe controlled enviroment. Started out as curiousity in one-way mirror defensive glass for a business security need. Then in an investigation deal on some cases with LEO/Ins ...and "others" investigators. Technology in bullets/loads glass materials...have improved since I did some testing.

Interesting tidbit: an aquarium with water works as soothing business decoration...in testing it is amazing how it really could possibly save an employee life...or a homeowner...depends on how used...even against .357 158 gr loads...someone had monies, we tested, aquarium purchased and employed as "safety measure" in a business. Customers thought it just for other normal reasons. :p

I'm not wired funny...I just use some different gray matter than others at times....Improvise , Adapt, Overcome, ....be curious , it won't hurt.

Just bein flippant Steve .. at your expense!! Sorta got my imagination goin! :D

Seriously - I would like to try this out ... maybe find an auto wreckers where they don't mind some trashed glass!:p

I'd imagine the tank of water would for sure be a great ''security'' screen .. nothing much better than water to stop projectiles ... particularly HP's!

''Wired funny'' ....... I am!!! :neener: :D

Chris, I never take you serious...wait...that came out wrong. Oh heck...you know what I meant. :D

I have gained permisson in wrecking yards/scrap yards. When or next time in PA...we better meet down the street...your wife probably has me on "permanent choke when I see Steve" list. :p

I shot at a windshield with a .22 4 or 5" revolver at about 20 yds. It deflected and wound up lodged in the top frame. Totally unscientific as I should have used the .38 I was carrying.:what:

I recall years ago a cop in N.J. firing through the windshield of his car at someone shooting at him. .357 mag I think. The B.G.s still dead.

There was a video out about a bank robbery hostage situation. Sniper tried to shoot one of the BGs through the front windows. The glass shattered, bg was missed. BG then ran through the lobby shooting people, shot like 11 people or something. SWAT finally had to do an entrance in the back of the bank. Lots of people killed in that one by the time everyone was done.

I heard a rumor of 'counter-sniper' teams learning to shoot simultaneously at a target behind glass, so the first shot breaks the glass, second shot gets the BG. No way to confirm this of course, but sounds like something to be trained for.

Glass will deflect about anything. Last Spring, Echosixmike and I shot a bunch of glass on the PD's range. We shot standard plate glass, autoglass, polycarbonate, a bullet resistant windshied from a HMMWV. We shot at various angles. Used .38 special, .380, 9mm, .45 ACP, 12 gauge slugs, 7.62x51, (M118 and Federal Premium Match 158 gr SP) 5.56x45 (M193 and M855) and 45/70. The most reliable penetrator was the .45/70.

I don't know if it's still taught but at one time we trained with two shooters using a countdown on the radio to shoot simultaniously, one shot dropping the glass and the other shot at the target. I never really though it was reliable though.

Find the movie "Deadly Weapons", from the early 80s. Usefull stuff mixed in with junk, including a whole sequence of firing through various auto glass, window glass, plate glass, brush, etc. All questions will be answered here, and a whole bunch more. Well worth the money....
