This is probably like asking what ammo do you use?

But, I'm interested in getting a new shop vise.

The Record "fitters" vise doesn't seem to be available in the USA anymore.

I am budgeting around < $500. I've looked at Yost and Wilton.

Any veterans and old pros with advice?

Thanks gents!

I have two old, (like i inherited them 30 years ago and they were OLD then) starrett vises. If you can find one of these, they are the best. I have two KURT manufacturing vises that go to the mill or the drill press.

One place to look is local high schools call and see if they have any left over from shrinking shop classes. I got two wilton's for 25 dollars from a highschool that was closing one shop class room.

I recommend a medium size Versa Vise or Pana vise for regular bench work, and one BIG, HEAVY, vise for those jobs like bolt bending that require heavy pounding. If you are doing barrel work, you also need a barrel vise. The barrel vise and the big vise need a very heavy bench, such as a top made from 2x6 lumber.

For the versa vise, get jaws of copper, brass, leather and rubber as you will find you need each at some time or another.
