Just saw an article in the NRA "Shooting Illustrated" magazine for April 2006 by a Dick Williams, titled "Single Actions For Personal Defense" (or some such title). There were two photos of a stainless Old Army with what looked like the 5 1/2" shorter barrel AND ADJUSTABLE SIGHTS. Other than the barrel length it looked 100% stock.

I have been hoping that Ruger would make something like that as the std. long-barrelled model is too cumbersome for my taste, and the shorty has only fixed sights. Naturally, I want the best of both.

Just sent an e-mail off to the magazine inquiring about it. Ruger's website has nothing new.

Anyone know anything about this, or know if someone out there is doing this sort of work?

Thanks in advance.

It's a custom job, any smith even over here will shorten the barrel and re-set the front sight, for the loading lever, either have the standard one shortened or buy a new one from Ruger for the 5 1/2" model:)

I've alway wondered about old army for SD, what did the article say?

The article was pretty well written, said about what you'd expect--properly used an SA does just fine for 5-6 shots. After that it's reload time; but stats and experience (3 feet, 3 seconds, 3 shots) indicate that by then it's all over.

Carried an 1882 vintage Colt BP SA on an assignment once as an LEO, just for the heck of it (days gone by!). It drew a lot of attention every time I had to haul it out and put it into a security box, going in and out of jails.

My old agency's current issue handgun is the H&K .40. Personally I could still get along with a good SAA and feel okay. I could even imagine using a 5 1/2" Ruger Old Army to go about my business.

I just want adjustables.
