A buddy of mine asked me the other day if he could use a shotgun scope for an AR short range scope because it's what he's got available at the moment. I said I thought that there may be some reason why you shouldn't use a shotgun scope for a rifle...something to do with internal mechanisms or something of that nature; similar to that of Air Rifle's and a normal scope. Is there some different type of shock that takes place inside the scope's mechanism? Looking for some advice.

Nope. If it can handle the recoil of a 12ga, it will definitely be fine with a AR-15.

The only issue is if it is some sort of bullet drop compensating scope for a slug gun (do they even make these?) it won't be calibrated correctly for an AR.

Notice on a lot of them it will say "rimfire, shotgun, or lever action". Well, "lever action" ranges from .17 up to .50 caliber but in general are short range because of the slug design and weight, so if I'm understanding correctly its more to do with magnification and parallax setting (usually set at 50 yards on a "shotgun scope"). When you think shotgun scope, think under 200 yards, preferably under 100.

I've been trhu this dilema...I put a burris AR-332 scope on my Colt match target carbine.
3x fixed power with red and green dots.
perfect for 6o yds targets.

I have a 1.5X4.5 Nikkon Monarch Turkey that I have used on various AR15's. It works great, but I havevmoved up to a 1.5X6 Leatherwood for a bit more range.

if magnified, it probably has a fixed parallax adjustment appropriate for shotguns/rimfire, and less appropriate for rifles

I like using such scopes on my rifles because it's about the only way to get any damn eye relief nowadays. I find the shorter range paralax issue to be blown way outta proportion for me shooting no farther than 300m
