Shortening 45-70 cases.

Just me .02 worth... I would probably run gas checks on that. I have a concern about gas working around the base of the bullet and nuking all the bullet lube before it gets into the rifling... a gas check wouldn't solve that, but it would keep the base true.

People make and sell MI compliant .45-70, with good feedback:

Cases can also be bought pre-cut, and it seems possible from handloader discussions to get good accuracy.

Legality seems to be OK. From http://www.michigan.gov/documents/ChapterIII_128581_7.pdf

"Loaded with" expresses ammunition, and not firearm.
And from the language I take it that means case length not cartridge length.

We have had thousands of refugees from Witchagain move down here since 2020. I really hope they aren’t bringing their voting habits with them. 😞

I cut down some a few years ago, just to try out. As noted by others, the case taper will get you. I had to run the end of the case into a .45 Colt sizing die to get any kind of neck tension.

They shot ok, as I recall. No worse than any of the other stuff I had been shooting.

From a legal standpoint, MI state law is pretty clear. You need a straight wall case, no longer than 1.8”. The cartridge overall length is irrelevant, as is whatever is stamped on the case head.

Shortened cartridges below. , between a .45 Colt and a standard .45-70.

I'd sure check w/ the local gendarmes before I went into the field.
Forearmed (with a return note from teacher) might save some grief.
