once.
Jeezzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Don't need to do that again. Ever
Buddy hands me a great big Super RedHawk. Here, try this he says.
I'm thinking .44mag and ok, I have a blackhawk in .44 mag, shouldn't be that big of deal.
Shot the first one double action.:what:
almost went over backwards.
Half the range looks up and goes "What the heck is that?"
I turn to buddy and ask exactly that, "yeah, what the heck was that?"

.454 Casull, Hornaday something or other. 1770fps at 50 yards shooting some 200+ grain bullet.
jeebbus:what:
Shot the next 2 double action, the remaining 3 single action (much better, still insane)
Handed it back shaking my hand to get feeling back in it.
and people shoot the .500S&W??????????/
Elk Hunting he says. I'm thinking more like Moose hunting.;)

Ya, I got one of those. Before I had it Magna-Ported the recoil was merciless. Too painful to want to shoot. The Magna-Port really helps. I currently have a load for the 300gr Gold Dot on top of 30.4gr of H110. It's stout, and stings a little bit, but it's not painful enough to stop shooting.

C'mon, be honest. You want one, don't you??? :D

454 Casull

 I know exactly how the feel is from shooting the 454, I shot one about two weeks ago, and my hand is still not right. I shoot left handed, and at work, I must use side cutters, so everytime I make a cut, I still feel the 454. OUCH !! Nobody told me I could wear shooting gloves, but I probably would not have anyway, but the other two guys were scrambliing for a pair of any kind of glove they could find after the one guy took a chunk out of his hand. Live and learn I guess. Shoot Safe !!!;)

I never shot a 454 but I got my S&W 500 about 3 weeks ago and put 45 rounds through it on Saturday. It was not that bad. People made it out like it is unreal, which it is not. Yes it has more kick, but the muzzle stays down pretty well, accurate right out of box and it is pretty easy to shot.

FANTASTIC!!!

Got my SRH 454 a few weeks ago, and it is great. Very accurate even though it is a real handfull. I should get my new die set tomorrow so I can start loading, and a cronograph. So far I have shot some factory Winchester 260gr jhp rated at 1800fps, I have never seen a jug of water explode like that. I have been shooting some 45lc out of it and they are pretty mild and don't seem as accurate. So, I am really loving it, even more fun than my other favorite .41mag. It did hurt my buddy who shot it, broke his support hand thumbnail. Jim.

I've shot one once - put 5 rounds through it, decided enough was too much. The range I inhabit once had a brass-framed revolver in 45-70 Long Colt; that monster was easier to shoot than the 454 due to the weight of the brass...if you could hold it up, you could shoot it... :D

I put a few rounds through a 7.5" Freedom Arms way back in the day... Didn't exactly knock my socks off, but I wouldn't want to put 50 rounds through it in a sitting.

Most potent I've shot in the last few years is a relatively tame Magna Ported 7.5" Super Blackhawk... A pussycat by comparison.

Haven't shot a 500 yet but I'm told that between the weight, the size and the porting, that they aren't nearly as bad as one might thing... At least the long barrel version.

I shot the 4" .500 on Saturday. It was one of those "try the gun and all you have to pay for is ammo deals". With very little cash left, I could only afford 3 rounds.

I shot the Hornandy 325 gr at 1900 FPS. I hit the metal plates at 20 or so yards and that recoil was HUGE. It didn't snap like the .454, but a BIG push back. I can't imagine shooting more than a few rounds at a time. There are no bears in my woods. I have no real need for one.

Yet I want one...

A buddy of mine got a .475 Linebaugh Ruger conversion. We head to the range. I felt like I was loading an artillery piece. He put up a Milpark target. I aimed for the center of the A ring and squeezed one off. My right hand and the gun came out of my left hand and almost vertical before I could stop it. (The gun stayed in my right hand though) It was a perfect shot. Centerpunched the A ring. I was pretty proud of myself. I started to hand it back to him with a smug look and he says "Oh no...ANYBODY can do it ONE time....."

It took me about 2 minutes to get the second shot off. Lots of breathing, twitching, jerking, watching the front sight dip until finally I was able to squeeze the trigger. The two holes looked like a figure 8. That was enough for me. It hurt, but not as bad as I thought it would, the single action frame lets alot of that recoil roll. Of course, the rest of the energy was absorbed by my right arm being thrown straight up.

My .454 SRH was ported when I got it, and I somehow knew to take an old fingerless leather glove to the range with me. I shot my own reloads of 28.5gr of H110, a "light" load, but without the glove that trigger guard did hurt. Put the glove on and had alot of fun shooting about 24 rounds, and then my hand hurt for about 1/2 hour afterward. :D

Gonna shoot it this evening along with a new Kimber 10mm and a 629 I picked up a while back.

Anyone have a SRH .454 that is cut down to 4 or 5 inches? I've seen some online, just never heard firsthand experience with one.

For some reason I can't shoot the longer barrels good. I tend to push forward and drop the muzzle when I fire.

I own both the Raging Bull in 454 and the S&W 500, the 500 is by far easier to control. The 454 has a much more violent recoil.

We are all different. I don't find the 454 bothersome at all unless a single action shot at an indoor range. The 475 Linebaugh is a LOT worse, and outdoor they are all a little more tame. The 454 is quick and hard, but if you don't fight it it won't hurt. At least that is the way it works for me.

I have a FA 454 with a 4 3/4 inch barrel , I have also shot the 500 S&W with 440 corbon loads . I just dont get all this hype on the net about the recoil from eithere of these . Sure they got some pop but I am waiting for more.

I shoot FA 454's frequently, 6 inch and a ported 7.5 inch. I find that the grip helps a lot with the recoil - rolling it my hand. They don't let me shoot them indoors at the city range, I did once and the noise bothered some other shooters.

It's quite an experience, isn't it? :D I had one of the first of the SRH's to come out in .454, before they put the new grips on them. The recoil from the heavy loads was so intense it drove the trigger guard back into my middle finger and nearly broke it. It hurt for several months afterwards. I had to get my courage up every time to fire that beast, but I had a sense of real accomplishment afterwards.

If I were to get a big boomer handgun again, I'd go for a BFR in .45-70. With standard loads the pressure is far lower than the SRH's 65,000+ PSI and recoil is more rolling, yet terminal results are still impressive and sufficient for big game. It's a real pleasure to shoot.

Oh - yummee, yummee!:D

Well, using as I do the 300 grain Hornady load .. which yields some 1850 ft lbs of ME .. sure it does ''bark'' a bit! :p But, when you look at the SAAMI pressures for this round, it ain't too surprising!

I started off with a Raging Lunatic, which I quite enjoy but found that eventually the SRH was the more pleasurable to shoot plus - for me - the more accurate.

Gotta love this stuff if you are a recoil junkie!!! :D

I know many have seen this but - here it is again . Raging Lunatic's ''dragon breath''!!!:p

To add .. I'll echo Cosmo's comment .. BFR in 45-70 is indeed a great tool ..... my chosen load right now is ''only'' around 1500 ft lbs ME from a 405 grainer .... but still ... at around half the pressure of the Casull .... not quite as fierce. Still ''grinworthy'' tho!

The 454 is great!

Had alot of onlookers at the indoor range when I went with my Ex's father. The Raging bul was alot of fun! I did notice as long as I didn't fight it, it was not very bad at all. I'm also sure the porting had a bit to do with it. I did knock the target down in the stall next to me... He forgot to loop the top of the paper over the "T" before clothes pinning it on. (basically a poor grip on his taget) The concussion wave from the Raging Bull took it right down for him :D (Or it was one hell of a coincidence)
I left the Range that day with some big grins! Wish I could afford the ruger version right now. -1 extra shot and probably better cylinder (The one I shot had #5 cylinder always sticking the case)

Glad to see the famous RB muzzle blast pic again! That was one of the first threads I browsed on THR. Still can't believe it's not photoshopped.

Some nice gun porn as well. Honking big DA revolvers look decent with scopes. What's mounted on the SRH?

What's mounted on the SRH?
Millet red dot. Does pretty good and have same on .44 SRH. Seem to stand the ''punishment''!:p

I know I keep posting that muzzle flash pic but - tell ya what - it was such a fluke and turned out so amazingly - just want to see it - again .. and again!! So far - haven't even got close to improving on it. Oh and .. no PhotoShop ... not even a tweak (well, except for a bit of cropping - that's all).

Shot a buddy's 7.5 inch SRH. Now, silly me, I think he is loading light, but nooooo. I shoot one round, with my weak hand thumb a few inches back from the cylinder, the recoil makes the gun go back, and it tears a piece of my thumbnail. No blood, but I hate it when my fingernails are not even. And I just had my manicurist do my nails in hot pink. ;)

Seriously though, the SRH and the rubber grips makes for an easier recoiling gun. Imagine if it was a SBH instead of the SRH!

I bet a 9.5inch SRH with a scope would be even easier to shoot. Might be tough to CCW though. :scrutiny: :D

The only serious recoil from my FA 454 came from a box of Winchester I picked up somewhere. The box didn't give any info other than the bullet weight but they are twice the recoil of FA factory ammo or my own handloads. They kicked the gun back so hard it almost hit my forehead. Makes it hard to concentrate on aiming.
