I was teaching someone the basics off shooting today. Took my Mossberg 802 plinkster. Weaver 3x9x32 scope. When we were packing up. A ground hog came out over in the trap field. I had permission to shoot it already. I estimate it was about a 100 yards out. Bullet was Winchester bulk 555 hollow points. Hit where i was aiming. He didn't move. Just some kicking a little bit.

Thanks. I think all the long distance shooting i been doing helped . I have her soaking in salt water. Going to cook it in the crock pot. The dogs fun with the head. Im going to preserve the hide too. Just need to run out and get some borax this eve. I took the guts out to the bush. I always give back to nature where i can.

It was real good. I had 2 helpings. They do have scent glads that need to cut off. Maybe the older males might not be as tasty. This one was a young female. Im sure gonna hunt for some more. Not sure what to compare it to in taste though. Been awhile since i had rabbit. The rabbit population is coming back. So ill be after them too.

Congrats ! I never ate one but heard they are good if you have the right recipe, except I don't know what that is. I bet this would be a good time of year to get one for cooking seeing as how they've been gorging themselves on grass all summer to get ready for their long winter nap. Those things are like an endangered species around here since the fox & coyote population got real big.

That'd get you kicked out of our gun club. Yes, even groundhogs.

I know our club's deer and turkey are off limits for shooting because they are tame. A photo from a recent military match called time out.

Normally the deer and turkey wander across the range from wooded side to wooded side. This one decided to stop and graze and to be shooed off by a RO so the match could resume.

I have not seen ground hogs or coyotes on the property. I might check on the rules for varmint species.

We had a family of them in our 25 yard back stop, two burrow holes about half way up the slope on either side. They would be running around the range while people were shooting. They’ve disappeared so some yahoo probably shot them. Shooting wild life on the club property is forbidden. Had several Turkey families also, haven’t seen them this summer either.

We had a deer start grazing to the side of a rifle range during basic training with M-14's, obviously the constant exposure to the noise didn't bother it. Maybe it was deaf by that point. lol

Our range NCO made it abundantly clear there would be consequences if the deer was harmed.

Congratulations CoalCracker. We used to have prairie dogs at the trap club. Occasionally a member would bring out some cartridge appropriate rifle and we'd bag a couple before we started shooting trap. We haven't seen many recently. I walked out through the impact area a month or so ago. Noticed a lot of badger burrows. I think nature is running it's course...
