For anyone curious what they're like, here's a video.

(warning... I suck at steel challenge)

At each stage you shoot 5 steel plates of regulation size and distance and height, and you shoot 5 strings of fire at each stage; your worst time is thrown out. (One stage you only shoot 4 strings). Your score is your total time.

Very fun, and a different type of shooting sport than the typical run'n'gun type (which are also fun).

I had a lot of trouble finding the red dot in my RMR optic for the first shots after presentation today. I really need to work on consistent grip and presentation. I lost a lot of time searching for the dot. I felt like giving up and shooting iron sights again. :banghead:

Is there a set no of stages for a match?

Are stages pre-plannned out of a book, or is are they up to the match director to design?

At our club we shoot 6 stages out of 8 that are on record, the first weekend of each month. The state match uses all 8 stages.

Hang in there; it took me a little time to get used to shooting with a red dot sight. At first when I brought the gun up I tended to point low. I thought about going back to iron sights myself but after some practice I was able to re-train my hands.

Steel challenge stages are all the same wherever you shoot them (assuming your club adheres to the standard stages). A full Steel Challenge match includes all 8 stages, but as noted, different clubs may shoot fewer.

You can see them here:

I could see you losing the dot !

Well, it looks like fun, and you handled the weapon, and the targets, well.

Did your body respond like you thought it would to the heavy clothing, gloves, and general whiteycold ?

What kind of bullets were you using on the steel ?

Some of your plinks sounded right on, some .... well, maybe it was background noise.

It wasn't that cold... about 37 degrees in the sun. Actually had to take my coat and scarf off as it got warm in the sun.

As for my body doing what it was supposed to... unfortunately that's about as good as it gets with me, warm or cold. :D I did notice in the video my torso and legs moving about much more than I thought during the draw. Need to work on that.

Bullets were 124 plated Xtreme over 4.3 of American Select. Worked fine. Some of the plates didn't CLANG like the others... I guess depending on where they were struck or how they were hung.

How long does it take you to find your brass?
I enjoy fun steel/steel challenge also. I have never done it in the snow though!

in the snow you pretty much lose your brass unless you put down a tarp. I shot 9mm and donated it to the cause. I usually pick up more than I shoot unless other people want it.
