Shot my first .45acp reloads today

Been thingking about it.
You said you did load 5.2 with the 1.25 OAL and still to light correct?
Was the feeding issue at 1.25 or 1.275 or both?

Are they the 185 FP or the hollow base round nose?
I see Berrys reccomends 1.25 OAL for the RN, no reccomendation for the FP.

Sorry about 20 questions, just trying to help.

I use differnent color sharpies to mark the bottom of the cases in case the ammo gets mixed up.
I make a key
Blue = (say 5gr OAL 1.23)
Green=
Black=
Orange=etc.
Wallyworld has a pack with 7 colors for less than $10. The wider tip makes it quicker to mark the case bottoms.

That way I can mark my different ones I am testing and put them all in one or two ammo boxs.

If it was me I would load 10 using (HP38)
with 5gr OAL 1.23
with 5.2gr OAL 1.23
with 5.4 OAL 1.23

Some guns do just have tigher chambers and need a shorter OAL.
Like I mentioned earlier I load the RMR 230s to 1.23. Others need to go to 1.2 in their pistols. (not saying these OAL are right for the Berrys)

That would give you about 30 rounds.
Maybe 5 each at 5 gr and 10 of each at 5.2 and 5.4.
Shoot the lightest/longest first.
I am guessing with that spread you will find a sweet spot that shoots and feeds. Once you have that you can test a bit lower/higher if desired..

As an example say 5.4 at 1.23 shoots and feeds. You might want to then try 5.3 and 5.5 or 5.6 and see if they seem more accurate. Or if you are happy with 5.4 then Yea! your there.

Normally you don't want to make two changes at one time, but you do have two issues, to light (stovepipes) and the feeding issue.
Shortening the OAL could take care of both even at the start charge of 5grs.
but maybe not.

For the heck of it you might start a new thread with the title
Favorite load for Berrys "type" 185gr .45 bullet and see what people have to say, even they use a different powder it might give you a heads up on what OALs are working for other people.

I would bet money (if I had any left after pating my taxes) that some peoples favorite load is going to be using HP38/WIN231. (Remember they are the SAME powder, not a powder that may load about the same)

Side note-Some mil-spec 1911s will feed SWCs (like the 200gr I sent you) fine and some just plain don't like SWCsno matter what the OAL is. (the SWCs do cut nice clean holes in paper targets :) )
All should feed RNs if the OAL is to their likeing. So after you get the Berrys going you might want to try the RMR 230s before the SWCs.

Please don't let the stovepipes/feeding issues get you discouraged.
Remember you are Relativity speaking just starting 1st grade. :)

Be safe , Enjoy

Yes they are hollow base round nose. I loaded up some rounds at 1.23 ranging from 5.2 to 5.5 I marked them with a sharpie and I'm going to the range today to try them. Actually right now :)

Bummer when that happens.
The outdoor range I go was closed a couple of times due to fog.

For the best I guess I went to cabelas and got a nice shell organizer tackle boxes so I can keep my reloads in order separate my different experimental loads from eachother. I loaded several groups 1 batch of 5.2gr at a shorter OAL approx. 1,22-1.23 and some 5.5 at various lengths 1.22 - 1.26 OAL. Ill start with the shorter 5.2 on move on to the 5.5 at the longer OAL and move down to the 5.5 shorter OALs. From how weak all the 5.2gr were im guessing some length of 5.5 will be ideal. I guess we will see.

Never shot the Berrys but I load 185 swc at 1.160" over 5.4 gr of W231. Works like a charm out of a milspec gun.

Ok it's been a while since I started this thread but thought Id do an update. Is shot my new and "improved" loads and they shot well. These new loads were various 5.5 - 5.7gr and generally 1.23 - 1.26 and they all allowed to 1911s to cycle fully and load new rounds each time. Oddly the 5.5 @ 1.23 felt like they shot the same as the 5.7gr at 1.25oal. I also brought the white box 230gr for comparison and the factory Winchester ammo had a substantially heavier kick. But I guess that could just have been attributed to the 185 vs 230 bullet difference. My hand loads although they all worked still shot a hell of a lot softer than the factory white box ammo.

Cool glad it worked for you. The RMR 230s with 5gr of HP38 will be closer to factory 230s in feel but still a little softer.

What you found makes sense believe it or not.
Oddly the 5.5 @ 1.23 felt like they shot the same as the 5.7gr at 1.25oal.
5.5 Shorter OALs increase pressure/velocity. The longer OAL of the 5.7 load decreases pressure/velocity.

More pressure generally = more velocity/more energy = more recoil.

Glad you got the functioning issue resolved.
It depends on what you are after, if you want factory power loads you might be able to bring the 185 gr load up another .2 gr. That would be 5.9 with is Hodgdons listed MAX with a different 185 and a shorter OAL. Lyman lists 6.1 as the MAX. If you decide to increase go slow and be careful approaching MAX charges.

I load to find a round that functions and shoots well for me in my pistols. Many times this is lighter than "factory" loads. I tend to like them that way, easier when I shoot 300-500 rounds at a range trip and the paper targets don't know the difference.

And to those of you who say loading a .45 APC down is blasphemy I say :p

Thanks DudeDog for all the input I think I found a good load for the components Im using as it cycles properly and reliably. I realize that the 185 Berrys is a lighter bullet and therefore won't deliver the "pop" of a 230 so I'll just consider it a victory for now. Also I shot these rounds using my crappiest no namer mags like the worst of all SA mags which I never saw as that great because the floor plates bend easy :-( and this made me feel better that they still had no hiccups despite thatI'm going to load 50 rounds at 5.6gr 1.24 and really test it and rapid fire at the more free style country range I go to sometimes that allows that rate of fire and if I get all 50 on paper I'll see that as proof of a decent load and a reason to make more. My Next venture will most likely be the lead .45 you sent me. I've been so busy that my reloading bag was put aside for a bit but now that the weather is nicer... Well ya know! :)

I know how that goes....where did all my time go???

I think you will like the lead bullets, just be aware that the SWCs are more finicky about feeding and the correct OAL to feed than a RN.
HP38/231 works great with them. (try 4.7 and 5 gr) Checking my notes again I have decided 5 shot a little better for me.

(But they shoot great and cut noce clean holes in the paper target)
Can't recall  did I send you some of each hardness? (12 and 18).

Will get the OAL I am using now for you tomorrow. (they are out in the reloading shed)
