I field stripped it to clean and oil it before we went. I have the plus package on my upper half. It includes a 4150 barrel steel, chrome lined barrel with a 1/7 twist rate, M4 feed ramps, individually MP & HP tested and marked bolt and barrel, M16 bolt carrier. When I took the bolt out of the bolt carrier it was lightly marked CMT and very visibly marked MP & HP and the barrel has a MP & HP 1/7 on it as advertised. Cleaned everything up, oiled it and put it back together. I had 10 rd. DPMS magazine that my FFL gave me. My friend who went shooting with my son and I gave me two USGI 30 rd. pre ban magazines (black followers) and is giving me four more, a few of which have the manufactured dates externally stamped on them. He has about 30 of them.

We get to the range, my son (10) gets his Ruger 10-22 w/2-7x28mm Leupold Rim Fire Scope and his new Marlin 336Y 30-30 Win. out and on the bench. My friend gets his new to him from his uncle, made in 1972 and NEVER fired Winchester 94 30-30 Win. out. I get my Remington 11-87 12 ga. 18.5" barrel, plus 2 rd. mag. extension (6+1 capacity), 6 rd. side saddle (not sure if that's staying on or not) and my new Stag, basically their model 1, 16" barrel with a A2 buttstock out. I bought the complete A2 lower half. When I picked it up my FFL gave me a GREAT price on the complete upper half with the plus package so I had to buy it. As we get everything out it starts snowing and blowing so hard we could hardly see the targets we just put up at 50 yards. Those really big wet lake effect snow flakes. The bench area has a roof over it. It was still blowing in on us.

Lucky for us it only snowed for about 15 minutes. My son and I fired 140 rounds through my new AR. I had to adjust the sights a little. I adjusted the windage with the rear sight on the removable carry handle and the elevation with the front sight post. I have it zeroed at 50 yards. We were shooting mostly Remington UMC 55 gr. FMJ and Federal M or XM193 55 gr. (brown cardboard box) ammo and a few Remington 55 gr. SP ammo. I couldn't find any 62 gr. FMJ ammo locally. I was very pleased with all three of the 55 gr. ammo we shot. I shot some groups as small as a half dollar. Not a single malfunction at all, we used all three magazines with all three rounds. Got home, ate, then cleaned it. I still have to order a chamber brush and maybe a chamber swab too.

Sorry for the long winded. . . . .or typed post lol. I'm definitely happy with my new AR that's for sure. It's great to finally have another one again after four years without one. I shouldn't have sold my last one. I'm going to have to get and try a bunch of different weights and types of ammo. I have one 30 rd. mag. loaded with 15 rds. of 55 gr. FMJ on the bottom and topped off with 15 rds. of 55 gr. SP ammo. If I can't get 'em with the first 15 soft points, maybe the last 15 full mental jackets will do it! :D

NYH1! ;)

I can appreciate your enthusiasm; I'm currently shopping for an AR myself. I've already purchased 120 rounds of XM193 and 60 rounds of XM855 so that I will feel obligated to purchase the rifle and to mandate the 5.56 designation. I've been kicking around the idea for a while now, but having to look at the ammunition should get me off my rear end towards that purchase.

Stag makes the lower I was looking at.

that plus package seems pretty cool and sounds like your bolt is the real deal. I just can't seem to sell myself on 1/7 twist. I am sure at some point I will relent and get it just because that's the official spec. Glad you had fun!

Buy the lower and upper separately if you can. You won't have to pay the 11% excise fee that way. Stag wants $949 for a complete model 1 rifle. They want $300 for the complete lower half and $545 for the complete upper half that makes the model 1 if you buy them separately, total $845. Those are their suggested prices, you can find them cheaper then that. You don't get a magazine buying them separately, but they only want $20 for new 30 rd. mags. They want $100 for the plus package on a complete rifle and $75 on a complete upper half. There are other really good manufactures out there too. I only really looked at Stag and RRA.

Oh yeah, our enthusiasm is definitely high that's for sure. I sold my last AR15, a RRA A2 Tasc Rifle, 16" middy back in 2008, I got what I paid for it. I wanted to buy better (Leupold) scopes for my hunting rifles and wanted to buy an AR15 with a A3/A4 flat top upper. I still need to buy two scopes, probably a VX-2 4-12x40mm for my 280 Rem. and a VX-1 2-7x33mm Shotgun Scope for my 11-87 12 ga., rifled barrel, cantilever scope mount.

I never thought it would have taken me this long to buy the new scopes and another AR. Between having three kids, a house, a nice '07 4x4 truck I leased new then bought, a '78 Camaro we're restoring and a nice '08 SUV for my wife, injuring my back at work in 2008 and missing a lot of time from it, then having back surgery last spring, it all added up. Such is life. However, I really wanted to buy the AR now before the prices start to go back up before the election this coming fall. My wife agreed with me. My son was only 6 when I sold the RRA so he never shot it.

He shot two of my friends AR's and AK's this past summer. He liked the AK's a little (I don't) and he LOVED the AR's. One was a DPMS my friend built and the other was a Stag left hand model 3. Both had optics. He shoots my 700 BDL 223 Rem. so he was really looking forward to us getting another AR. He was in heaven yesterday. He had his Ruger 10-22 2-7x28mm Leupold Rim Fire, his new Marlin 336Y 30-30 Win. short 12" stock and 16.25" barrel that santa brought him and he got shoot the AR!

Let us know what you end up getting and how you like it.

Good luck, NYH1! ;)

Honestly, I only bought the upper with the plus package because my dealer gave me a price of $520 plus $12 shipping for it. I was going to get Stag's regular 1H complete upper half with a 16" chrome lined 1/9 twist barrel. My last AR had a 1/9 twist and shot 55 and 62 gr. ammo the same, couldn't tell the difference, at least not with the A2 sights it had. I never tried any other weights then that in it. I'm pretty happy with how well my new one shoots 55 gr. ammo. I'm going to get some 62 gr. FMJ ammo and try a bunch of different types and weights of ammo too. This setup is going to be a SHTF, plinking and fun little carbine.

I'd like to get a varmint type upper with a 20 to 24" barrel. Stag has one with a 1/11 twist. RRA has one with a 1/12 twist. That's not going to happen any time soon though.

I think I got a pretty good deal on the one I just got. I paid-

$520 for the complete upper half with the plus package, tax included.
$..12 for shipping on the upper.
$302 for the complete lower half, tax and shipping included.
$..10 for a 10 rd. DPMS magazine. I didn't get a magazine because I didn't buy a complete rifle.
$844 total.

We can't have working collapsible buttstocks here in New Yorkistan, they have to be pinned unless they're pre ban. So I had him order the lower with a A2 buttstock. All three of Stag's complete lower half's are the same price though.

NYH1.
