Just read some of the thread on buckshot and home defense, and I have a question. What is #1 or #4 buckshot? Down here all I've ever seen or heard of is 0(ought), 00(double ought), and 000(triple ought). I have heard of "fours",or "sixes", and such for birds or squirrels.

I'd say that 00 is by far the most common. To be honest In my opinion it is the best compromise and the only size I would ever need. If I couldn't do it with 00 buck, then I'll use bird shot, slugs, or a rifle. I figure most people are in agreement and that is why you don't see the other sizes nearly as often. They are available, but I just don't need them or worry about it.

3 buck in 20 gauge is common. I have a bunch of it, buy it at Academy. Pretty devastating load for home defense or even shooting critters at short ranges. I have some custom loads advertized as 0000 buck, 375" diameter, in 2 3/4" 12 I bought 10 of for hog hunting on a local WMA that requires buckshot only. I haven't popped the cap one one, yet, though. I bought 10, figured I'd pattern 'em. I am skeptical that they'll pattern well. 8 pellets and they don't stack even in the case like 00 does.
