Guys,

I don't think I've posted in the Shotgun forum before but I have been spending much time snooping around here since the 870 is my new found love ;)

Anyway, thought this might be of some interest to you. I was down in Atlanta last month checking the market when I was introduced to this guy who was trying to explain to me about this safety devices that the company he invests in produces. I couldn't quite picture it until he emailed me the link.

Suffice to say, pretty neat stuff......a shotgun docking station that unlocks only via Biometrics (thumbprint). First showing will be at the upcoming SHOT show. Here's the link:

Denny, thought this might be of some interest to you too.

BTW, Dave McCracken, it's been a pleasure reading all your replies and postings. Many thanks. I'm a short tab south of where you are and I hope to have the pleasure of meeting you someday.

Ugh!

Used to be, dumb guy like me do good with dumb guns, and dumb gunracks. Now, looks like me must evolve, stand upright, stop dragging knuckles, get smart guns and smart gunracks! OK, that was pure sarcasm, hope I didn't wander too far off The High Road. Just can't abide seeing questionable gee-whiz technocrap put onto reliable, potentially life-saving devices. No good can come from this, from where I stand.....

Helmie, welcome to the 870 Lover's Club. The safety device looks good,I'd like to hear from some users. Of course, the only safety device that matters is a lb or two of cerebral matter found between ones ears. All else is merely accessories.

And thanks for the kind words.

Also, I've been toying with the idea of a Shotgun gettogether come Spring at PGC. Meeting and greeting, then wobble trap, skeet, 5 stand and trap singles for fun maybe some food for after.

We might even call it the Redneck Cup,heh,heh,heh......

Dave, I'm with you. I'm just gonna wait until some folks have tried it out first but I will go check it out during the SHOT show, more out of curiosity.

I'm in for a Shotgun get-together (when I'm in town, of course). I really could use some tips. I even started work on a new shotgun shell pouch, more for Trap, Skeet & SC. Maybe I could get you to try it out for me. Check it out:

Redneck Cup, heh, heh, yeah I read that thread :D

I Shot, keep in touch. You may not have to wait until Spring. Check back after the holidays, we may be able to meet on a Sunday morn for a brief session of trap, with the live version of Shotgun 101 thrown in.

As for the gadget, let's see if there's any users adding their $.02...

that thing looks pretty neat imo, but I would worry about it malfunctioning in a life and death situation. A lot of people don't trust autoloaders for self defense for the same reason, and that thing seems a lot more complicated (ie: more likely to malfunction) than an autoloader.

Dave, if you post a date, I'll (probably) be there. I live about 10 minutes from PG trap & skeet. :D

One question I have about this thing is," What happens in a power failure, or if the batteries(if any) die?"...

Nico, keep in touch. I shoot most Sunday morns(but not this one) and I'll PM you when I do.

I emailed them and asked what provisions were made for battery failure. I'll post a reply if I get one.

Rupestris, sorry bro but I never asked about prices. I shoulda 'cos I'm also interested in the handgun unit.

Sisco, please keep us posted. Thanks, mano.

Dave, keep me posted on any outing. I'm game and looking forward to it :)

Biometrics are not ready for prime time for such an application. And the backups like a key are too slow in an emergency.

Not even if missing your thumb, what if it's bloody or muddy?

I forget who, but there is somebody on the board who works with biometric scanners for building or PC login security, and he's pintedly said he'd never trust his life to one.

GunVault makes a cruiser style shotgun clamp lock that uses their proven finger button lock. If you're concerned about power, it takes AA batteries, and you can go to a camera shop and buy AA lithiums that will last a real long time. Assuming you have a replacment regimen, like daylight savings change day, or Smoke detectors etc. you should have no worries.

I want one to mount up inside the header of my closet above the door for one of my shottys. Reach up inside, bip bip bip bip, and it drops down into hands.

Seems like a nice idea, but as much as I love using computers and biometric technology, my experiences with it do not leave me with a warm fuzzy feeling. I do like the looks of both storage stations, and if they were to ahve a simplex system, or a keypad I would definitly be intrigued. I wish someone would come up with a docking station that will accomadate a shotgun with sidesaddle that is cruiser ready. Possibly locking the forend rather than the trigger guard. Not sure how it would work, but I would buy one asap as soon as I saw it on the market.

Hmmm... the website says "The firearm is available *almost* immediately..." Just how long is "almost immediately"?

Look at the electric locks that are sold for police cruisers. Use of one would require a transformer of some type to convert your home AC power to 12V DC but it's an idea. There are models with a key backup so you can access the shotgun without power.

State Police buddy got me some of those Cruiser locks back in the early 80's, I don't recall any electronics, just mechanical. I could be wrong, it has been a awhile. We had a Cruiser ready SG in a "telephone communications panel" , two side by side, one was real, the other was the disguise. This was in a bookeeping area which could view the front through a one-way mirror.

During the day and store hours, working late...etc. -unlocked Cruiser lock and cabinet lock. At night, everyone gone all locked up.

Just twist / pull handle, retreive and ready to use. Nobody knew except trusted employees, customers rarely ever entered the area. Same concept used for "fuse boxes" for handguns...just part of the settings in a business. It is shame all those electrical and telephone requirements have cabinets and boxes, ruins the decor of a place...I guess people just look past or don't notice...accepted in society. :)

sm,
The ones we use are electronic. Push a button and it unlocks. There are models with a delay of a couple seconds before it locks again and some where you have to hold the button down to open. Switch is concealed in the cruiser.

I think it's a good home solution. Shotgun can be kept cruiser ready in a closet or some other place (I like your phone panel idea  ) secure from unwanted handling, yet it's still ready for almost instant use.

Mr. White,
I really don't know when the electronic system came into play, this was early 80's. Being as I'm not LEO or ever have been, I bow to you on this. I was just fortunate to have some good LEO friends that assisted with Security needs. In a former life security was a real concern for that type of business.

When he made Lt, and was able to shed ponytail and beard, did more desk work, we installed a few devices in his office. Trustees would do some work on premises, and often times shackeled and cuffed prisoners made it to his area. He carried always, had a BUG...Murphy being Murphy, well a little extra insurance is not a bad thing. Dadburn panel for some new-fangled technology called computers were in a corner of his office, just ruined the hunter green decor and the duck prints ;)

Had to go in on a Sunday and "re-situate" his office.

I like the idea of these police cruiser type locks. Does anyone haveany links to websites that have info or even just sell them? I looked for some earlier this year, but all the ones I found lock around the reciever, and dont allow use of a sidesaddle. thanks
