Hey all,

As some of you maybe know, I'm from Belgium where gun laws are a little ... different than most US states. Lately it has been the idea of the govt to ban types of guns for private owners when there are no matches organized for them. We've fixed this by now organizing matches for almost every gun imaginable.

Yet, we do want to keep things fresh and interesting, so a couple of people have been brewing on a funshoot-style match for pump action shotguns. (All matches have been shot with slugs)

We've shot at soda cans, cd's and paper, but we want to do something else too.

What are some fun things to hit with a shotgun, that are cheap to obtain?
Most of us have little or no experience with backyard plinking here, so ideas from that situation are welcome!

We can't use steels (the indoor range manager won't let us), which is too bad. But we get the range for free to organize those matches, so we kinda have to obey his rules.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions, I'm counting on your American ingenuity :)

Hello friends and neighbors // I bow to your efforts in keeping your rights.

You could try swinging targets or rolling basket/soccer balls.(old ones)

There are targets imprinted with cards for shooting the best poker hand, maybe have a poker night one month and bingo or golf the next.

Good luck I hope to find some new ideas in this thread my self.

A standard clay pigeon thrower and some clays make for a great shooting session in my opinion. You can get a thrower and a box of clays for under $50US. This small machine basically launches clay discs in the air, and you shoot them with pellet shells.

There are also 'splatterboard' contests. These consist of putting a small paper (maybe 4"x6") target about 30 yards out. Each person shoots at their own target with a pellet shell. Whoever gets a pellet closest to the middle of the target, wins.

Isn't it sad you have to come up with a pretense, a dog and pony show, to keep a gun in Belgium. BELGIUM!

I like using fun targets like cartoon pictures of Barney ("I love you, you love me..."), Mickey Mouse, and Che...

Second vote for clay targets, but then I'm biased towards them (and one of the few here who uses his shotguns for clays and not tactical stuff). Using actual machines and set up quail walks, poison birds, flurries, etc., all using standard target loads (which should be cheaper than slugs or heavy field loads

Y-Man -- that was great, thanks.
Where do you live and where those jungle birds from a tape!?

He's shooting on an indoor range, so throwing clay birds in the air isn't a consideration.

Perhaps shooting stationary clay birds with slugs would give some instant feedback. We've used charcoal briquettes as targets, but that may produce too much dust in the indoor range. Maybe something as simple as a piece of tire (or other rubber target) suspended on a string would work. It would dance when hit, but wouldn't make a mess. The balloons do make good targets, but if you use them, use small balloons, since they present more of a challenge.

Hope this helps.

Does it have to be indoors? shotguns here are (other than home defence) are used mostly for shooting things out of the air. Weather is be hunting or shooting clays. you use small shot to shoot clays. you should set up a skeet/trap field.

They have Clay shooting in Belgium same as we do here, and I'm 99% sure they have PSG too, perhaps the OP should have a look into that?

Due to environmental regulations, shooting is 99% sure to be done indoors. Clays can be an option, as it is possible to shoot flying clays indoor, albeit on a reduced scale (specially equipped indoor range)

Clay shooting with double-barreled shotguns or semi-auto's is still possible outside on some places (temporary ranges "in the field", with a special permit), but we're trying to put the pump action in more popular use, as it is sometimes seem as a gang-style weapon due to a series of incidents in the 80's.

And I have to ask, what is PSG? maybe we have it, but i'm not familiar with the abbreviation..

Thanks for the tips so far, especially the balloons will be used for sure! :)

Practical ShotGun, have a look at this, there's loads more in a similar vein. The guy shooting there I speak to a lot on the main UK shooting forums, www.airgunbbs.com and www.pigeonwatch.co.uk

I didnt realise you didnt really shoot clays in Belgium?? Whats all that about? They shoot in Germany, and they certainly shoot clays in France, how did you get missed out with that one? :(

edit Check this one too - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R13eiQaUxeU&NR=1

Clay shooting is something that is practiced in Belgium, but due to alleged noise and lead pollution, there are very few places one can still shoot clays outside.

It does still happen on temporary ranges, which can only operate during one weekend or maybe two, per year

For most of those kinds of events, we do have to drive to the neighboring countries (sad, but true)

But what we try to do, a funshoot with pump action shotguns, is not covered under the agreement about temporary ranges, so we will most likely have to shoot indoors

Al La VodKa:

I live in Nigeria, and those bird sounds were/ are REAL. Though I have Blackbird song as my phone ringtone, and a phone call came in just as I started shooting...
