Well, I just got back from a brief shooting session out in the desert, utilizing my NEF Pardner Pump Protector, now sporting a Knoxx topfolding stock, and a heat shield, and running the shotgun out of a shotgun scabbard attached to the back of a load bearing vest.

First off, I've got multiple other shotguns, so the NEF was intended from the start to be turned into a more scabbard-friendly configuration. So I accepted the trade-offs in performance for that from the outset. I /personally/ think it was still worth it, but anyone else considering something similar should read this:

1. I put a heat shield on the shotgun so I could grab onto it while returning the weapon to the scabbard, since without the heat shield I could imagine it being a serious pain... literally... to get the shotgun re-sheathed. The problem is, it took a vice to bend in the sides of the heat shield to fit properly on the barrel, so if you don't have access to a really heavy duty vice, don't bother.

2. A more serious problem is, with the heat shield on, you can no longer see the bead when sighting along the top of the receiver. I had figured this would likely be the case from the start, so I guess it doesn't bother me as much as it probably should.

3. The knoxx topfolding stock has these little humps close to the hinge. Here's the thing... the stock isn't meant to be shouldered like an AR-style in-line stock, you're meant to just have the textured bottom part of the stock up against your shoulder. I KNEW this when I got the stock, and have fired it like that before... but lo and behold, this time, with me drawing the shotgun from the scabbard, unfolding the stock as fast as I could, and sighting up on the target... I went with all that AR-15 styled muscle memory, pressed the stock back into my shoulder, leaned into it... and got one of those innocent looking little humps straight back to the mouth when I pulled the trigger. $!@#^!$#%... :banghead: ...talk about an incentive to practice...
