I have a 1928 Ishapore converted SMLE mkIII .410 shotgun that I would like to convert to a .45apc carbine. Because it was imported and registered as a shotgun, do you think I will have to receive permission from the BATF or have to re-register it if I convert it? I browsed the BATF's website and FAQs, but I didn't see anything covering this topic.

Assuming you are in the U.S., there is no federal "registration" so there is nothing to change in that respect. There may be state or local registration. The only problem I can think of in federal law would be if you used the shotgun barrel and cut it to 16" before reaming and rifling it. That would be making a short barrel shotgun, which would be illegal.

I was going to buy one of those SIA kits, or at least a 16in .45ACP barrel because I can make a magazine adapter myself. If it makes a difference this will eventually become a Form 1 SBR.

First, keep in mind that shotguns operate at much lower pressures than pistol or rifle cartridges. The barrel walls are much thinner and weaker. If you plan to use it as a rifle, the existing barrel will almost certainly be unsuitable for conversion and will have to be completely replaced. Additionally, the chamber itself may not be strong enough.

Second, a company (I want to say Tromix) at one point converted a Saiga 12 shotgun into a rifle. The ATF ruled that since it completely changed the class of the firearm, it counted having manufactured a new firearm so they were allowed to stamp their own serial number on it. So yes, it IS legal to do a conversion. There's no rule that one long gun type can't be turned into another. However, it is wildly impractical.

Come on, guys, the OP's gun was a rifle to start with; reamed out to .410 for one or another obscure British reason. Fit a .45 barrel and it will shoot .45s.

Um, and please read, he is putting a barrel on it, after all what about snake charmers and those stupid single shot kits, um pistol/carbine thingys

Oh, are you going to make a hush puppy, a dehaverline???? carbine, they were made for the brits, kind of a silenced cut down enfield in .45 that took tommy gun mags.

I just gave up and emailed the BATF. Hopefully they don't shoot my dog now. Assuming that I can legally convert a shotgun into a rifle, I'm going for something like this just as a range toy/conversation piece.

It's hard to tell from the picture, but if the barrel is less than 16" from muzzle to bolt face, you will be in for a world of legal complication. Much easier if the barrel is longer than 16" and overall length is over 26".

+1

Barrel and OAL are obvously too short to be a legal rifle now. (16" & 26").

What you have now will require an SBR tax stamp.
