Remington and Savage made Auto5 clones, or thereabouts. The Franchi 48AL is not a clone, but is also a long-recoil action and is the best well known of the 'like an Auto5' shotguns.
The Savage 720 can often be found with some really nice relief engraving...also Winchester made the 1911...interesting sidenote...the Winchester has a knurled barrel to cock the gun with and lacked a handle on the bolt in order to get around Browning's patent.
Daiwa had a model A500...it was a basic knock off of the Browning A5. Daiwas were made in Japan and looked just like a B-A5. Got to shoot one once. It wasn't too bad.
I actually like the Savage 720 better than the Browning thanks to the elaborate engraving on them. A Savage that has been correctly restored is amazing and I saw one that had the receiver done is case colors that was unbelievably beautiful.
Years back, I had a 20-Ga Remington called "The Sportsman". Not sure how close it was to the Browning A-5, but without seeing the brand name, you could hardly tell them apart.
Way it was made (The Rem), it only held 2+1 shells.
I love my franchi 48 ALs... lighter and (IMO) sexier than the A5s, and quite cheap. I haven't paid more than $325. Nobody wants the 12 gauges since they stopped making them. *shrugs*
Yes, the 11-48 and the "Sportsman 48" which was a cheaper version of it. (I have the 20 ga.)
The neat thing, though is how much parts commonality there was between the 11-48s and a lot of other Remington repeating shotguns (878, even 870, recoil op, gas, op, and pump too).
My grandpa had a "Mohawk 48" that looks just like the Sportsman 48; I assumed it was a more plain grade -maybe sold by Wards, or one of the other chains.
