I mainly do shotgunning.

It seems to me that you can have more fun with shotguns than other types of guns. There are a lot of cool and fun games involved with shotguns -- trap, skeet, sporting clays.

Other guns don't offer as much fun.

Now, most of my experience is with shotguns. I am curious of other poster's viewpoint on this?

Completely agree with Mike. (Hey, it happens! ;) )

Try some plate matches, some IDPA matches, etc with your favorite pistol. The challenge is enormous, but you are always improving.

A good way to break into pistol-style matches is to go shoot a plate matche with whatever is your favorite revolver or semi, with light loads. To get the feel for movement past the line and around barricades, you might take your shotgun and go shoot a tactical shotgun match, which are admittedly a LOT of fun.

Compared to just target practice at the range with the rifle or pistol, then yes, shotgunning is more fun. Try comparing it to the other events the other guys have suggested, and then it's just a different type of fun.

Speed events or reactive targets (just like those clay pigeons) will make pistol or rilfe shooting more fun.

If you can use a .22, then the fun is even cheaper. For the price of 2 boxes of shells, you can load up with more than 500 rounds of .22.

Check around for rifle or pistol leagues.

Shotgun are very cool. My mossy is my favorite gun because of the BOOM it makes when you shoot it. (BANG is for wimps :D ;))

Bowling pins are fun. So is playing poker with a target. (You know, deck-of-cards target and 5 shots...)

For my bow, I'm working on making a target to play Cricket (the dart game). Now that is going to be fun! (and no hearing protection required! ;))

I go to a range with a VERY active shotgunning group, and about umpteen areas for them to shoot. It always seems to me that the shotgunners are more apt to operate in competitive groups, and more apt to wear certain types of clothing, etc. I distrust groups, so I have my doubts whether I would find it fun to join in. I don't think they'd approve of a Topper '88 or Mossberg 500 being used on their ranges, either :D

I love shooting rifles because it's only you and the rifle. There are some competitions, but you can go through your whole life and a million rounds without ever participating in one. There are no expectations to be met other than your own. And, aside from the obvious safety matters, nobody much cares what you're doing, how you're dressed or how well you're shooting.

IMHO, there's nothing more fun that knocking a tin can around the range with a rifle, or finally getting good enough to place five out of six in the black at 100 meters kneeling.

To each his own, I guess.

I, too, mainly do shotgunning. Of course, my reasons are that:
A.) I don't own a rifle
and
B.) My vision is not good enough to allow me to use one at really fun ranges.

I've also noticed what Cosmoline pointed out about the fact that shotgunners are more apt to work in competitive groups. It's kind of disturbing, really. :)

I like shotguns, however...

Rifles: 22lr for inexpensive plinking to .50 cal "someday we'll break that rock 750 yds away".
Handguns: same deal from 22lr plinking, to matches, to hunting (I do this) to pins, steel..

Set up a mini steel plate and pin match using NAA22lr minirevolvers and Beretta 21A's I learned how to make my buddy totally lose concentration I said..."Hey ,want to try my NAA mini-revlover speedloader and see how you like it?"

Now he has tried my shotgun...but the look on his face before cracking up was priceless on the mini speedloader quip.:p

I love to take my shotgun to the range. We have a plunking range near our home and it is great fun to shoot bottles and cans and pieces of clay birds that are left on the range.

I also like my .45 handgun and mimi 14 rifle, but I think my shotgun is the most fun as far as just going out for a good time.

I like to take my handgun shooting more serious, and I have a regimented practice to keep my speed and accuracy with the handgun.

Turns out there are really cool games to play with all guns, including "3 gun" matches to play with them all at once. I did some informal "4 gun" matches with handgun, shotgun, and 2 rifles. Someone will jump in and say they don't see the point in the 2 rifles, but it's hard to be competitive with one rifle going from a 25-200 yard range to a 600-900 yard range. A couple people would try doing it with one rifle, but they were never competitive.

"My mossy is my favorite gun because of the BOOM it makes when you shoot it. (BANG is for wimps )"

Hey now, smile when you say that pilgrim,,,

oh, you did

:D

i like boom too...

I like em all if they go boom. But for fun and games, gimme a Beretta shotgun. Seems the IDPA and steel matches are a little more serious in my neck of the woods than the clay target games.

Subgun matches are more fun than shotgun games IMO.
They are harder to find too.

I will shoot pretty much anything available including trap and sporting clays on occasion. Games I've played include Conventional Indoor and Outdoor pistol (Bullseye), Hunter's Pistol Silhouette, Conventional High Power Rifle (200 yds reduced targets, Bowling Pin shooting, and Steel Matches. Now my 11 year-old son and I are shooting e-mail .22 benchrest matches.

Fun, fun, fun!

Makes no difference what you shoot. Shooting anything is fun. Even if you can't hit a barn door from inside the barn. It is a good idea to try as many different flavours of the sport as you can though. Pins, plates, long range rifle, machine guns, sporting clays. Even just standing on your hind legs shooting bullseye is fun. Doesn't matter how well you score or even if you do. Shoot as many different types of the sport as you can because of all the great people you'll meet.

I was a shotgunner and rifleman up to about 7yrs ago. When I bought my 1st handgun. I havent looked back since. I still shoot my shotguns, but they are not as fun as my handguns.;)

Pistol shooting and shotgunning are fun...

But shooting Sub MOA groups with a tuned varmint rig or other high powered rifle, flat out gets it for me..;)

This is where reloading really comes into it's own.

Check out the cowboy shoots. Rifles, revolvers AND shotguns. Accuracy requirements are seldom great, with emphasis on speed. With lever-action carbines, thumb buster sixguns, and SxS shotguns, (mebby the odd Win 97 pump), this means dexterity and concentration. The equipment is most DEFINATELY NOT the differentiator. Unlike many other shooting sports, this one is not filled with aloof, win-at-all-cost gamesmen. Really friendly, nurturing crowd.
