Blackberry message: This is a message from the U.S. Capitol Police
1. If you are in the Rayburn HOB then Shelter in Place. Quickly move into the nearest interior office space or interior hallway and away from windows. The Capitol Police are investigating reports of gunfire in the Rayburn HOB.
2. If nearby, grab Go-Kits and personal belongings.
3. Close doors behind you, but do not lock.
4. Remain calm.
5. Await further instructions. Do not leave the building.

Fark.com had the story up in the past hour.
Reports of shots fired in Rayburn House Office Building across street from U.S. Capitol. Entire Capitol complex locked down. Dick Cheney sought for questioning

People seem to think it may be just a car backfiring, still gave a big case of the group jitters though.

Shots fired at Rayburn Office building

Reports of shots fired int eh parking garage. And 2 women reported seeing a man with a gun hiding in the Rayburn Gym.

Police investigating. No reports of injuries currently.

Reporter for Fox News said one woman was taken away with what appeared to be a minor injury.

Hope this turns out to be nothing, because this would be a bad time for an anti backlash while congress is looking for something to take the focus off illegal immigration.

(CNSNews.com) - Update: Ambulances and the FBI Terrorism Task Force have arrived at the Rayburn House Office Building. Is it just a drill or the real thing? We still don't know. Capitol Police are said to be investigating reports of shots fired in Rayburn's underground parking garage.~~ The building is in lockdown, said a Fox News reporter, who was corralled in the Rayburn Building's cafeteria and refused permission to leave. Capitol Police made an announcement over the internal paging system, telling people to "shelter in place," which means stay away from windows and find an out-of-the-way place to wait. Capitol Police reportedly were going room to room in the Rayburn Building as part of their investigation. It's still not clear if there was gunfire -- or just a report of gunfire.

Looking more and more like absolutely nothing has happened.

Initial reports said that a gunman burst through a checkpoint and killed 2 capitol police officers. That appears to be untrue at this point.

Then there was a report that there was a gunman in the Rayburn Parking Garage. This appears to be untrue at this point.

Then there was a report of a man with a gun hiding in the Rayburn Gym. that appears to be untrue at this point.

The woman taken away in an ambulance had an anxiety(sp?) attack.

SWAT searching the building romm to room looking for reported gunman.

Next press conference will be at 1:15pm.

I will keep updating this thread. I am watching FoxNews live and all kinds of conflicting info is coming in. I and doing my best to only report what is fact. Lots of people that are in lockdown in the Rayburn calling into FoxNews.

Reports of gunfire, gunman, Capitol lockdown

How could this be? There are no guns in DC they are banned:confused:  .

Reports of gunfire, gunman prompt Capitol lockdown

Friday, May 26, 2006; Posted: 12:35 p.m. EDT (16:35 GMT)

Police cordon off a street in the Capitol area after reports of the sounds of gunfire Friday.

Manage Alerts | What Is This? WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Capitol complex was locked down on Friday after reports of gunfire in a garage and a separate report that a man had a gun in a Rayburn Office Building gym.

"At 10:30 this morning, we received a report of shots fired inside the Rayburn garage," Sgt. Kimberly Schneider, a public information officer for the Capitol Police, said.

"At this time, we continue to investigate. We have tactical teams inside the building."

She said there was no indication that anyone had been hurt.

CNN's Dana Bash said the Capitol was reopened, and there were conflicting reports it was closed for a second time after two women reported a man with a gun inside a Rayburn gym.

A senior law enforcement source told CNN's Brian Todd that police were investigating the possibility that the man may have been a plainclothes officer.

Law enforcement expert Mike Brooks said he had not heard any reports of victims or physical evidence of gunfire.

He noted that Capitol Police have a firing range in the basement, but a congressional source said the shots were not heard from that level.

Business continued as usual on the Senate side, Bash said.

The Containment and Emergency Response Team was searching the area, Brooks said. (Capitol area)

CNN's Ted Barrett said people were moving outside the Rayburn about an hour after the report came in. That was "probably a good sign," he said.

Five ambulances, "a ton of police cars and a ton of cops" were also there, but there was no indication of any immediate threat, Barrett said.

"It certainly is calm and controlled at this point," he said. "The police do not seem overly concerned that there might be a gunman loose at this point."

The alert came moments after a press conference held by Rep. John Sensenbrenner on immigration reform, CNN producer Deidre Walsh said.

"We saw several Capitol Hill police officers running quickly down the hallway," she said. Soon after that an announcement was made throughout the building.

Rep. Peter Hoekstra, R-Michigan, was conducting a House Intelligence Committee hearing at the time.

Hoekstra interrupted a witness to tell those at the hearing to remain in the room and said doors must be closed.

"It's a little unsettling to get a Blackberry message put in front of you that says there's gunfire in the building," he said.

"They said they heard gunfire in the Rayburn garage, but this is a huge building, I'm guessing it's a car backfiring or balloons popping," Gene Smith, chief of staff to Rep. Howard Berman, D-California, told The Associated Press. Berman has an office in Rayburn.

Rayburn halls were virtually empty and police were not allowing anyone to leave or take elevators or stairs to the garage, the AP reported.

"No one's panicking, everyone's calm," Charles Isom, spokesman for Rep. Chris Cannon, R-Utah, told AP. "It did ruin some people's lunch plans."

I'm sure a congress critter just needed a distraction to move bribe money out of his office before the FBI got another subpoena.

FoxNews reporter stated that she was informed they have begun to scale back.

2 injuries are an anxiety attack by a staffer and a twisted ankle of a capitol Police Officer.

Looks like it's turning out to be a non-event.

Now they are saying the staffer was "shaken up" what ever that means.

Capitol Police Press Conference Update

My comments in italics

1 person taken out after "panic attack". No info on a female officer reporters said they saw taken out on a gurney. Maybe the twisted ankle officer.

Original report was a call to capitol police of sounds of gunfire in the Rayburn Building.

Still going door to door in Rayburn.

Still investigating report of shots fired in parking garage.

No information if the firing range was in use this morning.

People being escorted out of the building as it's cleared, after they are properly identified and will be re-admitted after it's cleared and confirmed secure.

No one in custody, no one apprehended. No one identified as not belonging
there at this time.

Spokesman has no info on a BOLO for a gunman being issued.

Another press conference in an hour or so.

Elevator Mechanic banging on something in elevator shaft

MSNBC reports that officials have been reviewing video from the garage and elsewhere to determine the source fo the sounds that were reported as gunfire.

Reporter said that at this time they believe it was elevator mechanic(s) that were working in an elevator shaft banging on some part of the elevator.

Could be 2 or 3 hours before they have completely cleared the building.

A lot of construction work is currently going on in or around the capitol complex . . . according to the "esteemed" Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, construction work is also happening at the garage at issue . . .

I doubt it.
They've been burying the constitution and bor for a long time without reprocussions from the people. Why should they start to care now?
