Cabala's is running a sale on them, $239.99 with a scope. A quick Google search turns up a large aftermarket, and it seems I can get 25-30 round mags pretty cheap. I have been wanting to buy a .22 plinker because the larger calibers are pretty expensive to shoot these days. Putting 200+ rounds of 5.56 down range gets pricey, but 500 rounds of .22LR is nothing.

The only thing thats holding me back is that I bought 3 guns last month:
FN49
Mosin 91/30
Springfield 1911

Also one the month before...
K31

Also just spent $500 on ammo for said above guns...

I need to stop spending so much money on guns! So I'm hoping my high road friends will talk some financial sense into me!:D

Owner of four here, so I'd say yes. Not sure what the scope is, but it's going to be easier to shoot than iron sights.

Lots of good info about upgrading them at Rimfire Central forums.

Some of them are a bit unreliable until the first brick or so of ammo is run through them and they smooth out.

Factory trigger pull is pretty bad. It's easy to stone the hammer, and easier still to buy and install a good aftermarket hammer like a Volquartsen, for around $25.

Aftermarket magazines often don't work well, with the exception of the 25 round ones made by Tactical Innovations.

I must warn you, it's easy to spend a bunch on these guys.

The standard 10/22 carbine stock doesn't fit right with a scope. It has WAY too much drop.

Package guns typically come with scopes that belong in the trash.

I had a 10/22, and I sold it. It sucked.

All told, I'd suggest hanging onto your wallet. Get a .22LR, no doubt. Get 10. But don't get too excited about having to buy THAT one.:)

I'd also consider the Marlin 795 - with the current rebate promo, you can buy two of those for the price of a 10/22 and the accuracy out of the box is usually better. Or you could wait... I don't think the price you mentioned is all that big of a sale.

Yea right.

Hard to beat a 10/22. They are dependable, reasonably accurate, and there are a million aftermarket goodies for them. I put a cheap Simmons 4X scope on mine. It works just fine. The kids shot it for years and had a ton of fun with it. It is still great for fun cheap plinking. It is not a target gun, but it shoots well enough for most purposes as is.

Sounds like a 22 in general would be good for you. I would go for the Kel Tec SU-22 I have one and really prefer it over the Ruger except maybe the Ruger target version.
Rugers are OK except for the bedding, trigger, soft threads on the receiver, extractor, and bolt/firing pin design.

Package deal scopes can be pretty cheaply made. Be careful about what aftermarket mags you buy. The only hi-capacity mags that work well are the TI mags.

I think you would be better served to buy the rifle then a brand name inexpensive scope and rings.

If your like most the rifle is just the start, you well start up-grading it soon $$$
This started out as a $100 used 10/22.

No! Don't buy a 10/22! You don't need any more guns!

I'm sure many others here will agree with me.

You guys are bad, I might have to buy one!:D

Well what I really want is the Sig 522 but I can't get them in CT because of the AW ban. It would make the perfect training tool for me since I own the bigger version.

So now I just want a cheap .22.

i see them here for 199, depends when and where. i would get one too but debating between the 10/22 or a savage .17hmr. and no you can never have too much guns.

I picked one up at my local Academy for $189 a month ago. My 6 year old is already shooting "minute of coke can" at 25 yards using a bench rest. I don't even mind reloading 200 rounds per session with just the stock magazine...but tomorrow I'm going out alone to get some shooting in. I'd say get one.

I say "do it"....!!! I've had one for years, shot all kinds of ammo through it, and I've never had a bad experience with it yet....great gun!
Tac:)

@weg
where do you find magazines for the marlin 795?

For $120 you get a marlin 795 + $25 refund! Kinda want one now after hearing 10/22 is not the best as I thought it was. It looks like a mossberg plinkster 702.

Zack-- Midways latest flier has the 795 mags for sale, origonal Marlin
Hatteras guy-- Marlin 795, Marlin 60 are my picks, they really only need Tech Sights added to make them really shootable unlike the 1022 who needs some after market stuff to make them run without frusturation

I have had my Ruger since 97' and im not gonna lie. I have only bought 2 extra mags for it, and it had some Stove Pipe issues with the extracting but that was a very very easy fix with a new extractor. This seems to be a pretty common problem with Ruger 10/22's. BUT for me... this is the only problem i have ever had. Everything is still stock after 13 years!!

I VOTE YES! On getting a 10/22! Beautiful fun little guns! :)

That's easy. Don't buy the rifle no matter the price.

I have a 10/22 Deluxe that I bought about 20 years ago. Time flys. It's still stock except for a 4x scope that I put on it. It is an okay rifle for plinking and small game hunting. The joke about that rifle is that I bought it to replace my Weatherby Mark XXII.... can't be replaced by a Ruger anything unless your use is blowing holes in cans.

I have a 10/22, it's not the greatest, but I've never had any problems with mine. I'd say go for it. Mine is still stock and i love it, short , handy and reliable.

The Ruger 10/22 is an awesome weapon. I would suggest looking around at your local stores though. I bought mine for 180 bucks at a local place. Tapco makes a cool stock if you don't dig the sporting style. And a cheap red dot by bsa or something like that will make it a nice 50-100 yard plinker or small game weapon. There are alot of mags out there for it as well. I suggest hot lips or any steel lipped mag. <---Steel lips worth the extra money.
