I just read an article about the new CZ 600 that really sparked my interest! It looks like a really "cool" design. I was thinking about upgrading my .30-06 and giving my old one to my 16 year old son anyway. My only holdup is they only offer the '06 with a 20" barrel. Not sure how that would effect performance???

20 inch is fine for me in a hunting rifle. 30-06 is not a wimpy cartridge that you have to squeeze a few more fps out of it unless you are shooting targets at a mile like one of our members. When I was much younger I though the muzzle blast out of a 20 inch barrel was cool. Just my opinion.

I'm seeing two questions: CZ 600 yea/nay, and 20" ballistics for the 30-06

I don't really have a useful opinion on either, but for the second part I would recommend providing some specific information about your preferred .30 bullet weight/type, handloads or factory ammo, shooting distances, intended game, etc.

I'm inclined to think that a large capacity case like the '06 would be more efficiently mated to a longer barrel, but it may not really matter depending on your circumstances.

Also, how firmly wedded are you to the '06?

I've not handled a 600 yet, and I've no idea about action smoothness. There is a current recall in place for early rifles, so it looks like they missed a bug or two.

I use mostly factory ammo, but am just starting to reload. I like heavy for caliber bullets (180-220gr). I hunt inside of 400yds and it would be used for deer, black bear, and maybe a future elk hunt.

No, there is a recall on, they are fixing the barrels into the guns permanently.

CZ 600 rifles were designed to allow the users to replace the barrels themselves to change the caliber. CZ has learned that if the barrel is improperly installed, it is possible that the rifle could still be fired, but potentially result in a failure.

Based on the CZ values of providing the best, most reliable products and never compromising our customers’ safety, we have decided to issue a safety recall on the CZ 600 rifles. CZ will correct the issue by permanently installing the barrels in CZ 600 rifles.

Although it is a disappointment the recall is not a total deal breaker. One of the cool factors was to be able to change calibers by changing the barrel at home however apparently people who should not be messing with guns have been changing them and not properly putting them back together resulting in a recall. There are other neat features that still attract me to this however I have not made a decision yet still looking into all options. If not the 30 -06 I am also half tempted to give my son my 300 win mag and go with their 300 win mag version instead lol.

I would not fret over the stated reason of the recall. They forgot the first rule, if it is possible to be screwed up some idiot somewhere will find a way and then sue you into the very gates of hell.

I have a couple of older CZ rifles, and could not sing the praise high enough, I am a fanboi. Both rim and center fire.

I have also been fan of CZ for years. A sporterized Brno 8x57 Mauser I found cheap turned me on to them. I bought my daughter a 527 in 7.62x39 for Christmas last year and it is an awesome gun! I wish I bought me one too lol

The recall of the 600 is concerning, but I'm not as worried about that as I am CZs decision to discontinue some of their best and most beloved models, including the 550 and most recently the 527.

I also bought a brand new 527 in 7.62x39 last year. The 22" barrel CZ American. It's one of the best rifles I've ever owned.

I'm not ready to rush in as a part of the guinea pig vanguard for the 600. It will be a wait and see for me.

I'm wondering what's happening at CZ. Have they lost some of their best people to retirement? Have they had a big shake up in management and the design team?

I don't know, but I'm not willing to find out the hard way. I'm treating CZ as a new company that must prove itself all over again. They've done some really stupid things lately. I don't know if it's the same CZ or basically a new crew that just has rights to the name.

I would still be looking at some of their older discontinued models that are still available new in box. The people that designed and built those knew what they were doing.

I wouldn't consider one. Marketed with user changeable barrels and then a recall eliminating this feature would be bothersome. Knowing if the final deposition was that rifles would no longer have this feature or if they are going to perform a design change to fix the problem would help with making a decision. Hard to make choices without know what the final outcome might be.

A 20 inch barrel wouldn't be a show stopper at all. Might be more handy and lighter with a shorter barrel with not too much loss in velocity.

I'm a big fan of the BRNO guns that were the direct-lineage predecessors to the recent CZ 452/527/550 lines, and also a fan of the 452, 527, and 550s. And I've done much damage to my wallet proving it. (Well, with these guns now bringing 2 - 3x what I paid for them, I guess the damage isn't really damage after all.)

The 457s are apparently good guns, and the 600s probably are as well, but they don't threaten my wallet. I'm very happy with the older generation guns.

I don’t like the idea of paying a premium for a new design that’s ugly and has some new feature built in, only to be told that, sorry, the new feature is no longer available because you are too stupid not to hurt yourself, but don’t worry, the gun is still ugly and still costs the same -and presumably still has the extra weight and complication of the new feature’s parts, even if you can’t technically use it anymore. Just does not sit well with me. So the CZ 600 series is a hard pass.

I think the real issue with the recall isn't that you can no longer quickly change barrels yourself, but that even your gunsmith can't change barrels. You can't even buy a barrel. It uses its own barrels and they aren't going to sell them. So send it in. But for how long will they service these guns? Then again, people still shoot hundred year old rifles. So replacing the barrel on a fairly inexpensive rifle is not a concern for everyone.

Yes I LOVE my 527. What do they say.....A riflemans rifle.

I'm not sure how they "fixed" the issue, but if they went to Savage style barrel nuts, I wouldn't mind too much.

The aftermarket would likely start producing pre-fits and those nuts/barrels aren't hard to change. I wouldn't call them "quick change" though.

Being primarily a wood and blued-steel guy, here's my idea of a "CZ" 600 that appeals to me -- my BRNO ZKK 600 in .270, made by CZ under BRNO "supervision." The ZKK 600 was the mid-point in the evolution of the BRNO/CZ line of Mauser centerfire sporting rifles. BRNO Mod-21 --> BRNO Model ZG-47 --> BRNO ZKK-600 --> CZ-537 --> CZ-550.

I have a few really nice wood and blued rifles, but I hunt a lot in bad weather which is part of the appeal of this rifle having the polymer stock be and nitride treated barrel. My dream rifle would be a stainless CZ 550 in a good quality synthetic stock

I have owned several CZ rifles. My only beef with them is every one of them had an excessively long throat. You could never reload a few thousandths off the lands and fit the round in the magazine. They were also designed for a 50+mm objective lens which is common for Europe where you can legally hunt at night. So the bolt throw would hit the scope if I mounted a 42mm objective lens with the bell of the objective say an 1/8th off of the barrel.

I don't know if they have changed those things for the North American market or not, I have not owned one for a long time. Worth taking a look at before you shell out your hard earned money!!
