hello,
well let me first start by saying that i know all the gun rules ie know your target and beyond the target, but this is somethiung different, last week i came home from work at 5:30am i got out of my truck and heard something running in the hills by my house( i live in ky. and there is hills on three sides of my house) so i stand there a min and it runs down the hill and through the creek by my house, by the way there is all kinds of deer in my yard but this was no deer, it hit the creek and made a huge splash and left really big tracks in the bank, i could not tell what kind of tracks they were but they are big, but i went back in the house and got my 300winmag win mod70, and my streamlight ultrastinger and looked around, i heard it then it just quit running i could not see it, so i went back in the house, well last night i was out feeding the dogs and i had my ultrastinger with me so i shined it on the hillside and inside one of the old coalmines that are up on the hill there was this set of green eyes looking dead at me(there are 9 old coalmines on the hill from the 20s) and it had its eyes locked on me and i was staring at it, me and it were about 100ft apart, it was back inside the mines about 10 feet all i seen were these big green eyes looking at me, they looked like they were about 8-10" apart, but i have no idea what this was and i really dont care if i found out, but i could have split its head with the 300 mag if i wanted should i if i get another shot?(i dont hunt and i dont like to kill animals but this is weird)

what i would do is try and look around in daylight see if you could figure out what it is maybe .only think i could think of (but im really tired) is a mountain lion.. if it charged me i would shoot it.. Other wise not much you could do

The just green eyes are spooky though for sure ....

Edit for more thought out statment

Never shoot anything with out a positive ID

No, don't shoot it. To shoot anything without knowing what it is, is just plain dangerous. Could be anything or ANYONE.

Respectfully,

jkelly

There are a couple of things you could do:

1. Call your local wildlife officials and ask them to check it out.

2. Perhaps take a picture of the tracks left by this animal (?), and have someone identify them.

I've heard of bears living in old mine shafts, but I don't know if they have green eyes. Could the tracks be those of a bear?

I'd guess mountain lion or bear; human eyes don't reflect. Deer have green eyes(reflect as green anyway). Bear should be denned up now but maybe nobody told the bear. Look around in daylight-armed!

that is the reason i did not shoot it, i will never shoot until i know what it is, the tracks are so distorted, i mean it is really heavy because i cant stomp and put a indent in the ground as deep as these were, i only saw two tracks on the bank and that is it, i am going to go in the morning up by the mine and shine my light in it, if it charges i am goin to make it wish it didnt, but i know it is not a deer, when it came through the creek it acted like it was trying to get me to leave like i was invading its privacy, but its eyes they would blink about every 5 seconds and it never moved its eyes off of me, it knew exactly where i was and what i was looking at, i now fear for my little dogs and cats life outside, there have been tales of mt lions but no proof, also bears but no eye witness on them,
ill post a update tommorow,
thanks,
jon

Could be anything or ANYONE.
A very high probabilty it wasn't ANYONE as the human eye dont' reflect the light like most animals we see at night. That is the secret of their superior night vision.

Cool, he's got a Sasquach.

Or the dreaded CHUPACABRA!!!

:D

Nope. Shouldn't shoot unidentified objects unless you hear suspenseful music like those played in a horror flick. ;)

Think i would find a well armed buddy to go with me if you coudnt indent the ground as deep as it .. either ya got a bear or Sasquach or a might big alien ...or a Predator from the movie Predator... dont shoot unless ya get horror music or theme from close encounters..lol

well i sure hope it aint a CHUPACABRA lol, i am going to look for more track in the morning, i hope it is a bear just to say i saw one, i also thought about getting one of those cameras that strap to a tree and is motion activated, to let it be the thing to take a picture, i have to say though it is the most freaky thing i have saw in a long time, about 10 years ago i was squirrel hunting(back when i hunted) and took out 7 of 10 wild dogs with a winchester 1300 20 guage i was scared then but i was young,

Maybe it was a Ninja Bear with night vision goggles?

-Seriously, Good job NOT shooting, I like the "grab an armed buddy and check it out in daylight" type of suggestions.

...the human eye don’t' reflect the light like most animals...

Yes and no, I have seen under certain conditions human eyes glow, but they are not green they are red or orange sort of like in a flash picture. I would tend to think bear or mountain lion. I live in the flat lands of central Ohio and when I use to hunt we would on occasion find huge claw marks on trees about five or six feet up stripping the bark off and several sheep were killed around the same time. The sheep farmer found one large set of paw prints and two sets of smaller ones, the local wildlife dept. said that it was in fact a mountain lion. FWIW I have lots of family in Knott county KY and they were told that there was bears and wolves brought in to keep the new elk herds in check so that there would be less need for hunting permits and also slow down the turkeys. But hey these could a just be unfounded rumors
;)

Human eyes lack tapetum lucidum, the light-reflective coating on the internal portion of the retina/choroid plexus. Only animals (other than man) have it. It increases the light-gathering performance of the animals' eyes in low-light/night time for nocturnal endeavors. Odds are it was a canine, I'd speculate.

tapetum lu¢cidum, the iridescent pigment epithelium of the choroid of animals, which gives their eyes the property of shining in the dark; the two primary types are the tapetum cellulosum and the tapetum fibrosum. Called also t. choroideae.

Sounds like the perfect time to invest in either a .50AE Desert Eagle or go with the tried-and-true Marlin 1895 in .45-70. Or see if you can do what the others've said and go with another heavily-armed friend during the day. Have them walk point, though :p

Maybe it was a ROUS... :D

:what:

Uh... I'm going to go ahead and vote for a couple of well-armed friends. That's pretty spooky.

Last I heard my ex-wife was gonna head back east.

She could've settle in Kentucky.

If that's her watch out! She's mean. She's big. She's ugly. And her motto has always been, "Leave no evidence or witnesses.":D

Well if its Bigfoot and you're in Washington County NY you better not shoot it. They just passed a law that you can't hunt Bigfoot
They just had it on the news Friday:

http://www.wgy.com/news/local.html

WHITEHALL PASSES RESOLUTION TO PROTECT BIGFOOT
February 19
BIGFOOT MAY...OR MAY NOT...EXIST IN THE WOODS AROUND WHITEHALL, BUT IT'S NOW PROTECTED. VILLAGE BOARD HAS APPROVED A RESOLUTION...MOSTLY SYMBOLIC...THAT MAKES IT ILLEGAL TO HUNT THE LEGENDARY CREATURE. RESEARCHER PAUL BARTHOLOMEW SAYS PEOPLE HAVE BEEN SEEING SOMETHING IN THE WOODS FOR CENTURIES....DESCRIBED AS UP TO 8 FEET TALL....WALKING UPRIGHT LIKE A MAN, BUT LOOKING LIKE A GORILLA. BARTHOLOMEW SAYS THE IDEA IS TO "EMBRACE" THE BIGFOOT LEGEND, AND MAYBE BRING IN A FEW TOURISTS TO WHITEHALL ALONG THE WAY.

Assuming that this is a serious post, I doubt that this is a cougar. Doesn't sound stealthy enough, or the right size.

My guess is it's a cow or bull.
If you don't hunt, why do you own a .300 Magnum rifle? Odd choice for just a house gun...Not criticizing, only curious.

Tim-

I didn't know about Sasquatches in NY. I've read extensively about Sasquatch (sometimes under other names) and know about reports from Texas and Arkansas, as well as the numerous reports from California and the Pacific NW. (And other countries, including Canada.) Guess I'd better add NY to the list.
