Should I look into this gun?

I found an ad for some guns in my area and one of them happens to be what I am looking for - a .22wmr lever action. I thought because of budget constraints I would have to settle for a henry (or not settle for, just get a henry) but I really wanted a winchester for unsubstantiated reasons.

As it happens the rifle in the ad is exactly that, but the price is suspiciously low. I thought I'd run it by someone who knows something about something and could tell me if I should bother the guy about looking at the rifle.

Here is the ad verbatim:

3 guns for sale
first- Rifle-winchester model 9422M 22 winchester magnum with a bushnell scope there is rust on the barrell outside only from being on the boat other than that in excellent condition $150.00

second- Handgun-357 mag Rueger security 6 (stern Rueger Southport Conneticut) beautiful condition $300.00

third- Handgun(pocket) Beretta Model 95B 22 Caliber Made in Brazil Good Condition $150.00

Please call xxx-xxx-xxxx for any further information

I'm not interested in the ruger revolver, as I already have one, and the beretta I couldn't find anything about at all. Does beretta make a 95B? If they do I might be interested in a .22lr pistol. But these are just side notes. I'm really interested in the rifle. Anyone own one of these and is the rust recoverable with a refinish, or is it a waste of time?

If the rust is only light surface rust, you might be able to remove it with Flitz. I've done this with a number of older, slightly neglected guns and they've turned out pretty nice. If the rust is heavy or has caused surface pitting, then you might want to consider having it reblued. I think that the asking price is decent as I've haven't seen many of these rifles around anymore. Beretta made some of their pocket autos in Brazil before they set up a plant here in the U.S.. Its probably a Model 950B in .22 Short.

I wouldn't look into ANY gun, it might be loaded ;)

Seriously, that .22 WInchester is worth more than 150.oo, go fer that, refininsh it if it's too bad, it's still worth it.

Ah, well I just looked at my funds in the bank, and I can afford only one of these guns, since I have taken care of all of my bills, filled the gas tank, and paid my credit card off (finally) I have just about $200 that isn't spoken for this month. Guess I'll be eating rice for breakfast lunch and dinner for a while if I get to it fast enough.

Update: I just called and they asked me to call back in about 10 minutes. I hope that doesn't mean the lady is on the other line with someone who wants to buy it!

Are these rifles good stuff? I see them going for over $500 on gunbroker. To be honest I don't know anything about the track record of winchester's firarms. I've never shot one of their guns, but I like their WWB :)

Oh man. you got me.

I know I'm attacking everyone with tons of questions in one post, but is that bushnell scope they mention any good? I've never shot a rifle with a scope on it before, and I know nothing about them.

Yessir, Winchester makes high quality stuff. I am slightly more concerned about the rust, tho. The ad said "from the boat", so I assume that rust could be salt water corrosion. But if is only light on the outside, I'd take a chance. Good luck!:D

So it looks like I got dibs on the rifle. They said that they took it to a gunsmith who called it "surface rust", which doesn't bother me. I can clean that up myself. I asked if there was any pitting, and it didn't seem like they knew what that meant, and replied that the gunsmith told them that the rust didnt get "into the barrel, just along the surface". He probably told them he would give them $100 or so for it, so they're listing it for $150. I might make out pretty well with this one! Thanks guys!

I'll post some pics if everything works out.

I bought a 94/22mag. when they first came out. Only problem in 30 years or so was a broken firing pin when I first got her. She is old and beat up now as she was my truck gun for a long time. Never jamed, accurate as can be and smooth as a silk purse.

Grab it before it's gone.

I'd be wary; if he can read "STURM, RUGER & CO. INC." and turn it into "stern Rueger Southport Conneticut", I'd really have to doubt his attention to detail.
