I have a second generation Glock 23 (40 S&W) and have a friend that has an unfired second generation Glock 19 (9mm). My 23 is in like new condition and there is the possibility of making a trade with very little additional expense to myself. I generally don't consider myself a paranoid sort but with so much talk about 40S&W Glocks kabooming I am wondering if it might not be better to switch to the 19? Without trying to rekindle the Glock kaboom debate, would you consider this to be a prudent move? Thanks, Mike

Keep your Glock 23. Most of the Kaboom stories are due to the fact that people keep trying to shoot lead reloads through their Glocks. As long as you use quality factory jacketed bullets you will be fine. I have about 5000rnds through my 23 and it has been perfect. Keep your 23 and enjoy it.

I am really a big fan of the G19!

I think it is one of the outstanding members of Glock's line. But trading because of a fear of KB does not make particularly good sense. As has been suggested, using appropriate ammo and keeping your Glock clean and well maintained make infinitely more sense to me. As a matter of personal preference I opt for 9 mm pistols because of economy and availability of ammo - but fear of KB is not a problem in my mind. Good shooting;)

Topic is a moot point as the trade offer is now off the table. He would sell me the 19 but since he quit shooting some years ago doesn't really need another gun.

I'd switch. Not so much for the kaboom reason though. Most of those incidents I've read -- it was always due to reloads -- which Glock warns against. If you use factory ammo, you'll be just fine. I'd switch with the 19 only because the ammo is cheaper and more fun at the range. All my guns are 9mm at the moment and until I can get a Beretta 8045 -- it'll stay that way.

If the trade is off -- try trading it at a shop for a 19 -- sweet gun that's also now in my collection.

If you like your gun and its caliber, consider buying an aftermarket barrel. I have a KKM barrel that converts my G-20 from 10mm to .40s&W. Drop in, no fitting, perfect function. KKM barrels have tighter chambers and better case head support. They also clean easier than Glock barrels.
Many at Glocktalk recomend them for .40s&w pistols.
You can also get a 9mm conversion barrel.
My G-20 with conversion barrel is more accurate than the G-35 I bought.

I think the operative question is: with which can you put the mostest holes the closest together in the shortest possible time?

I have a .40 bbl for my Glock 32, but don't use it much (mostly 'cause I don't care much for the .40, rather than fear of kB's). I was thinking abt this unsupported case issue last nite, and again pulled the 357 SIG and .40 bbls from my G 32 and SIG 229 and 226 to look them over. The relative lack of case support in the Glock is really quite striking. In 357 SIG, it's still less supported than in the SIGs, but prob only 1/3 or 1/2 as bad as in the .40. While a lot of Glock kB's seem to be ammo related, the lack of case support is very real, and overall it seems that the Glock .40's are less able to handle whatever combo of factors it is that causes the kB's than at least some other brands. My personal opinion is that Glock is a dish best served in 9 mm flavor per its original design, which is why the G19 is my most frequent carry gun. I have much less reservation re using the .40 with the SIGs, as the 229 was designed for the .40 and the 226 slide was changed accordingly from it's 9 mm form. That is, other than knowing that hotter rounds like the .40 and 357 SIG will likely accelerate wear (as would 9mm +p+ or a lot of +p's, for example).
