Call me nuts but I'm looking into shrouded 357 snubs. I had planned on getting a 642 but ended up with a PM9 but still have a hankerin for a revo.

Who is producing a 357 sunb that enclosed and suitable for pocket carry?
How does recoil compare to a PM9, PM40? I shot the 642 and it had a different recoil. I think it was the grips though.

S&W also makes a scandium J frame that has a shrouded hammer, the 340PD.

VERY light pistol, I haven't shot it, never had the chance to, and too scared to shoot .357 magnums outta it! :D

They are a valid choice but are for more experienced shooters, imho. A good shooter with a DAO 38 snub will be able to transition to a 357 model easier than a guy first learning to shoot snubs period. YMMV

Like J.M. I have the Taurus 651 (5 shot). I also have the Taurus 617 (7 shot). I love them both.

Ok you're nuts! But so are a lot of other folks!

The only shrouded hammer snubby I have is the Taurus 851BUL. It weighs 17oz, and carries very easily in an Uncle Mike's #3 pocket holster. It is 38 +p and shoots great.

I do have Taurus 85 (38) and 617 (357) also, but not in shrouded hammer. Taurus makes several in this style though. Check out the 'snub fest' thread for some great snubby photos. http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=118230

My 617 is a handful to shoot with 357 loads. Nothing that you can't manage, but it does get your attention. I tried the 642 also, just like the fit of the Taurus better. I can see more shrouded hammer snubbies in my future though.

Smith makes a J frame 357, model 649 in Stainless Steel that is a shrouded hammer model. IMO the advantage of this model over the 640 is that with the 649 you can still thumb cock the revolver should the need arise. The extra weight of the 649 makes for a much more pleasant weapon as regards recoil. The Scandium and Aluminum alloy modelsl are just not heavy enough to absorb the recoil generated by full house 357s. Just my 2 cents.
