Hi folks. I notice on some threads that many folks stock up an enormous amount of ammo, not everybody, but quite a few. Among those of you who do, is there a general feeling of trouble on the horizon, availability problems, disorder, terrorism? Do you think it is truly wise to stock up, and if so, why? Just wondering if I should get more serious about my ammo supply and having a good stock of other essential items. I'm not the paranoid type, but I don't want to be naive either. Your thoughts?

IMHO this is not something you want to discuss in the open and maybe not even among “friendsâ€, never show your hand and keep the details close to your chest.

Do what you gotta do and stay safe.

Not sure but I know it's over 10k of rifle ammo of various calibers. Isn't that enough to warm up a barrel?

What Oracle said, my main reason for stocking lots of ammo is when you are shooting 1,000rds per month in just one centerfire caliber, it doesn't pay to buy it by the 50rd box. Combine that with the fact that ammo keeps forever and like any other product you get discounts for purchasing in bulk and buying by the case looks smarter and smarter.

It's nice not having to reorder/restock every time you shoot.

I'm the guy at Costco with the push cart stacked full of supplies.:D

"Your thoughts?"

My thoughts are that the wise person always prepares. Just how much you prepare depends upon what you think is likely to happen.

Buying in bulk is a good idea for several reasons. Economically you generally get a better deal. In the case (pun not intended) of ammunition, IF you know that your firearm tends to like that brand and shoot well, it makes sense to get it in bulk so that you have a supply of something you know and trust.

I think that a person is smart to stock up on money, food, water, ammunition, and other essentials to prepare. Not that I think that Armegeddon is around the corner, but to be prepared for other, more common situations. Localized natural disasters, lean economic times, loss of job(s). Those sorts of things.

How much you stock up on is a very subjective issue. Economic advisors generally recommend a six months supply of money in an easily accessable form to prepare for job loss or other financial hardship. Drawing from that I feel that a 6-12 month supply of consummables may be a good target for someone who wants to be prepared. However it may be difficult to get a 6-12 month supply of everything without a difficult financial investment. For example, how would you store 6-12 months of gasoline? And if you live in an apartment in NYC, you may have limited storage space for other things.

Does your lifestyle allow you to live in a place where you can store this much material? Can you pay for it? Can you effectively manage it?

I may be straying too far from your original question however. But the same thoughts still apply. If you think you can afford it, and will use it, not just sit on it waiting for doomsday, it may be a good option to consider.

Take notes. There may be a test in the future. :D

There's also always a chance that the govt. will restrict or increase taxes on ammo sales, especially imported ammo (which is often cheaper than US made).

Learn reloading, and bullet casting if you want. Stockpile supplies. Could last you much, much longer if necessary.

Late in the Clinton years, there was a rumor that he was going to impose restrictions on reloading components. So, I bought enough powder, primers and bullets for 10,000 rounds for each gun I own.

I still have a lot of the rifle stuff left, but I've had to get more components for the pistols.

For plinking, the South African .223 ammo is a good buy in bulk, so I have a lot of that.

I can't always find what I want, when I want it, and if I do, it's not nearly enough. It's easier to buy massive amounts.

Gotta help the kids of the good folks at UPS and Fedex pay for college. I do it for the children :D

Not the End of the World....

Did anyone notice that power outage last week on the East Coast? I think it was in the papers.....

Having a week's worth of drinking water and 50 pounds of rice would be nice, at least. Maybe an extra six pack or two of your favorite soft drink?

I don't know how to calculate a "week's worth" of ammo to defend against scrounger-looters. But I think it would be comforting to have, just the same.

Somehow, it 'feels' cheaper to grab an arm load of ammo and shoot until I get tired rather than going to the store, buying a couple hundred dollars worth of ammo, shooting and stopping prematurely because I realize how much I'm spending.....

Hey 10-ring, like that time we blew 60-70$ of ammo that night and we were only shooting for 40 minutes? :D

Ammo Inventory

I have basic Stock levels for all calibers that I shoot.I Shoot the oldest first then when I hit my stock level I re-order that way I never am out

I would say that it is a good idea to learn how to reload and stockpile supplies for that, and stockpile some cheap Wolf ammo for your SKS or Mosin Nagant or whatever.
If you need ammo for a pistol, I would suggest Sellior & Bellot.
