I posted this in the autoloaders section and recieved no responses and I figured that the people here would probably know better anyway:D. I just bought a new/used Kahr MK9. some guy sold it to my gunshop/smith without ever firing it, and my gunsmith put 2 or 3 mags through it with no problems. He was about to clean it and put it on the shelf when i came in. I got a good deal and took it home with me. When i cleaned it, it was NOT dirty at all! It still had the stuff from the factory on it(it was blue by the way, never saw that color before). Its great except for the slide locks back every few shots! I called my gunsmith and told him that. He said he put a new stainless steel guide rod and springs in it and that i needed to break it in, and the recoil spring is probably too strong. No malfunctions of any kind, it just locks back. I've never had that problem before. Is my gun smith right and the recoil spring is to strong? it came with wolff replacement springs and guide rod. so I put the wolff springs and guide rod in the gun, and im hoping that will fix the problem. So my main question is, Is there a specific reason why the slide locks back? ammo? recoil spring? it happened with american eagle 115gr fmj and rem golden sabers 147gr. It happened with the flush mag and 3 of my 7 rounders. I am lucky and have a great gun shop/gunsmith and he's always honest and has good prices and doesnt lie to people so i know he will take care of me! I just like getting advice from more than one person. thank you in advance.

I don't have much experiance with auto loaders but most of the slide lock back function is done by the magazine follower button pushing up on the slide locking mechinism, so I would suspect the magazines before any thing else.

I would suspect you are bumping it with your thumb during recoil.

Sounds like you tried several mags with the same result.

Try a different hold or thumb position and see if it stops.

As i have both of you guys posts in the past and you both are extremely knowledgeable, I have to say that i know its not my thumb, I did a lot of reading on the mk9 and a lot of people said that their thumb gets in the way so I made sure mine wasn't. I doubt its the mags because i used 4 different ones. Someone pm'ed me and said it might be the slide lock lever being slightly out of spec and pushing up the bullets and sure enough it was. the bullets had scratches on them. I lightly filed it down enough to make it stop touching the bullets. I'm hoping to get to the range next week and if there is still a problem i will keep your advice in mind. I thank you both for your input and just because i am curious, have either of you ever heard of that happening with the slide lock lever?

It is quite common with 1911's when using different bullet shapes then the old GI RN-FMJ.

I have almost no experiance with Kahr's, so I couldn't say if it is common with them or not.

I almost suggested you check that, but since you said it was doing it with both 115gr fmj, and 147gr golden sabers, I thought it probably wasn't related to different bullet profiles both hitting the stop.

do not have a clue, My wife started shooting the same pistols and ammo I use, I started her off with one round in the magazine and the slide back, 10 rounds 10 cases did not clear after firing, most turned sideways, return spring too heavy? Ammo not loaded heavy enough? could have been both or either, I do not have this problem with the ammo or pistol, she was not holding the pistol tight enough, I fixed this problem with new ammo, I expected the slide to lock back after each firing, had I put two rounds in the magazine I would have to consider there was a feed problem with a jam, this did not happen.

Again, I was at the range when I noticed the person next to me having trouble, he had a new pistol, new ammo, he said something about taking it back then handed it to me, I shoved the magazine up, released the slide then shot 8 rounds, the slide locked back when empty, I removed magazine and replaced it with a loaded one then shot it 8 more times, I explained to him he was not seating the magazine, this caused the slide to lock back after each round was fired.

What does this mean? Make sure the magazine is installed correctly by giving it a good smack, if that corrects the problem you can decide for your self the amount of effort required.
