Sig 225

So, tell me why I should or should not get a SIG 225. As many of you know, Gander Mountain has police trade-ins for $349. All I know about SIG's is that they have a sterling reputation for quality, and lots of police departments use them. My centerfire autoloading pistol collection right now consists of Glocks, 1911's (Colt, Kimber, Para Ordnance) and an H&K P7-PSP. What do I need to know about the 225? Is it worth having just to have a SIG, and to add variety to my collection? What are its strengths and weaknesses?

I can't really come up with a good "reason" to buy one, but $349 for a pistol with the reputation of a SIG seems like it may be enough of a reason.

225's are OK guns. They are smallish and slim, thus many like them for ccw purposes. But your PSP is better IMHO.

The biggest problem with the 225 is that they are notorious for heavy, not smooth, trigger pulls. At least that's the consensus from the forums I visit, as well as my personal experience with my 225. If you get a well used one, it may have a good worn in trigger.

It depends on what you want it for. If you're collecting the European single stack P's, then the 225 is a must. If you want a ccw, then the 239 is slightly smaller, and comes in bigger calibers if desired from SIG, and then there's other makes.

I bought a 225 to complete my P5, P6, P7 collection. I love the P7's, the P6(225) and P5 aren't nearly as nice.

To me the greatest thing about the P225 is how it fits my hand. I have small hands and short fingers and the P225 fits me like it was custom built for my hand. I've had my P225 (not a police trade-in P6) for about four years and I have put ~5000 rounds through it with only one failure, which was due to a broken trigger bar spring (probably the weakest link in the P225). As to the trigger, I must have been lucky because despite reading about others complaining about their P225 trigger, mine is rather good (though not quite as good as the trigger on my P220 9mm).

Having said all that, if you have average sized, or large hands you may be happier with the higher capacity P228 or P229. But for those of us with small mitts, the P225 is a godsend.

Almost forgot to mention, I have such faith in my P225 that despite having owned 56 other handguns, my P225 is my HD pistol.

I should also mention that some of the older P6s have a slightly different feed ramp on the barrel and may not feed HP ammo reliably.

The P225 is an excellent firearm. It's a single stack, but has a wonderful ergonomic fit and is perfect for those of us with stubby fingers. It's the only semi I actually enjoy shooting.

Make sure the GM P6 pistol is not a heal clip verions (some are.) Get them to let you examine ALL THEY HAVE and field strip the best ones. Mine hand little wear on the outside and zero wear on the inside. Shoots like a rifle.

I like the P6 trade-in I got recently. Yes it does seem a bit fussy about ammo, so you need to find what works for you, but it is very accurate. It does represent an excellent value at maybe 50% of the price of a new SIG. Definitely a shooter.

What Cosmoline said. I had a 225, it is a fine handgune. I sold it because I also have a 228 and big hands, so the 225 was a bit redundant for my needs. The trigger on mine was excellent, no different from my 228 or 226, accuracy was also excellent. For the price, I'd go for it!
