sig 226 or xd or m&p?

In the market for a new .40, have 2 and reload, have 1k to spend, leaning towards the sig 226, thoughts? I want a full size for plinking fun.

I would choose the 226 but with those three it comes down to personal choice. All would work fine.

If money and availability were of no concern, I would take a SIG over an XD or an M&P any day of the week.
IMHO the only difference between a Glock, an XD, and an M&P is personal preference - get whichever one fits your hands more comfortably and which you're most accurate with. But I think SIG sits a little higher than those if you take the whole picture into consideration: quality and aesthetics, and for a plinker I would always go steel over polymer.

Really going to come down to personal preference. I quite like xDs, and M&Ps are also fantastic guns.

Sig. I like all metal for plinking fun........if it was gonna go into carry rotation id lean more towards m&p, but that's me.

I tried for years to like Glocks. Or the one Glock I bought and never could get to shoot right. Funny thing, I took the Army Combat Pistol course in Hawaii and hit something like 99% of the targets with an M9 Beretta. A lot of those hits were while wearing a gas mask, too. Wasn't the gun.

I like SIGs. They fit me. The ergonomics are right. With very little adjustment - initially - in my stance and posture the sights line up with my eye every time. So I own a half dozen of them, carry a 229 in 357 SIG from time to time when I travel.

I don't like the HK or S&W guns, they don't fit me. Same with Glocks. Exception being the HK P7M8. It just works. It's like the MAC of 9mm handguns. CIA spook I used to shoot with carried one in a sharkskin holster and let me shoot it once. I own two now.

Find a way to shoot each and every one of those guns you mentioned, making sure you can reach the controls comfortably, that you're not overreaching for the trigger or slide release and the sights come up to a natural point of aim for you.

Buy that gun. Have fun.

I would pick the Sig, but I am a big Sig fan. I carry a P220r or a P229R everyday....

Sig P226. The quality, accuracy, fit, and smoothness of the P226 is beyond reproach.

I like sig. But there's some good deals floating around on turn-in .40 glocks. You can save a lot of cash to spend on primers and powder that way. And the sig cpo's show up in .40 sometimes, too.

All good guns; I've shot all three and carry an XD. Depends in the trigger you want. For what you want, I'd pick the sig, then the xd and the m&p last.

I have the xd9 the m&p9c and the sig 2022 all three are great guns but for pure plinkin the sig by far is my favorite to take to the range.

I love the looks of most Sigs and perhaps this is just me, but I find the Sig a little snappy in .40S&W. Admittedly, this was with a rental and the recoil spring could have been tired. Granted, snappy doesn't mean painful or irritating. It just seemed to have more muzzle flip.

However, from this limited experience, I find the recoil characteristics from my Steyr M40 and M&P40c in the same chambering to be less snappy and more enjoyable.

My latest .40S&W purchase, a Springfield XDm 4.5 is also agreeable, though I do detect a bit more snap than my Steyr or M&P.

Personally, I'd recommend the M&P.

I realize I'm in the minority as I've never found a Sig that I've liked. I own both the M&P 40 & the XD tactical in a 40. You can't go wrong with either of those, but I would keep the XD, by a whisker, if I had to get rid of one.

Granted, snappy doesn't mean painful or irritating. It just seemed to have more muzzle flip.

Look for a diagram comparing the height of their respective bore axes above the hand.

Sig would be my last choice. (Bulky and heavy) just like all sigs. IMO the XD would be what I would choose.

Some years ago, a guy (PO) and his girlfriend were shooting in the lane next to me and while she was shooting, what I thought was P226 DAO 9mm, he asked me if my Sig was a P220/45. I told him yes, it was a DA/SA and he said he'd never fired a Sig P220/45. I said he could but I just shot the last of my 45 ammo but I had a Beretta Px4/40/G DA/SA w/laser and he was welcome to give it a few mags worth.

He offered the same with his P226 and it was soft and balanced and at the second mag/load I realized it was, also, a 40cal..

I've got to say that I luved the DAO P226 and he was highly impressed with my Px4 40 w/rotating barrel.

I've shot many 40cals and so far IMO the P226 is one of the best when it comes to balance/feel/recoil and forgiveness.

All three will work, but the Sig is by far the best quality. Shoot all three and find which works for you.

Don't know if it would matter to you but having the M&P in .40 would allow you to shoot 9mm and 357sig by simply buying extra barrels that run about $70 each. The M&P fits me and I shoot it nearly as we'll as my old High Power.

Having had all 3, I'd vote P226 for a range/just cause gun. I've been preferring the M&P over the XD and sold the XD off years ago.
