I was thinking about getting a sig and I really would like to get a 226, but then I was thinking that its probally too big and I should get a 229 for carrying.

Does anyone carry a 226 and is it too big to carry ? Also how does the 229 compare to the 226 in size and its ability to carry? thanks a lot

Good choice with Sig. If this is going to be a dedicated concealed carry gun, I'd go with the 229. It's the shorther length and height that make the 229 a better choice than the 226, although there's not a huge weight difference due to the stainless steel slide of the 229 (* You can get a 226 with a stainless steel slide, but it's more $$$).

By the way, the stainless steel slide of the the 229 is probably going to be less prone to holster wear, as an added bonus.

Check out the Sig 239, as well. It's a tad bit smaller than the 229, also has a stainless steel slide, but holds slightly fewer rounds than the 229. The 239 is definitely a crowd pleaser judging by the opinions of dedicated Sigophiles on the Sigforum.

I used to own both a P228 and a P229 in 9mm. Although I do like the compact SIG P228/P229 pistols the P226 in 9mm is just on a different level. For me, the accuracy and shootability is so dramatic that if you can CCW a P226 I'd opt for the P226. For the longest time I didn't think there would be much of a difference since I didn't find much of a difference between a Glock 22 and 23 or 17 and 19 or H&K USP/F and a USP/C. That was until I got a chance to actually shoot a P226 compared to the P228/P229. As you can tell, I hold a certain amount of reverence for the P226 9mm. Just don't take my word for it, try them both and see if its true for you as well.

Al lthe domestic 226's have stainless slides for a while now, that won't be an issue.

You going to carry inside waist or outside? The extra 0.6" of the 226 could make a difference, but the grip is only abt 0.1" longer.

Really, I'd shoot both before deciding. I like my 229 a lot, but the no doubt the 226 fits me better.

I've owned and shot both a P229 in 40 auto/357 SIG and the P226 in 9mm. I love the grip and trigger of the 229 and carried it until I bought a Walther P99 (which just seems to carry a little better since it's lighter, although it's not as comfortable to shoot).

I never really liked the 226. I know it's a fine gun, and it's not as badly oversized as a Beretta, but it's close. I guess it depends on how big you are and how you dress as to whether or not it's a viable carry gun. I can't imagine concealing something that size easily.

I agree with Ian11. My first SIG was a P229. I then got a P228, which I liked a little better (different balance due to slide weight, maybe). I then started shooting a P226 which really (for me; YMMV) handles and shoots better/faster/more accurately. In real life, it's not that much longer in the grip or the barrel, although those little bits could matter I guess, depending on how you carry.

I carry the 229 .40 daily in OWB.
I have shot the 220ST and have a huge jones for that gun.
I have not shot the 226, but almost purchased that instead of the 229, I don't regret it, bit I think any Sig is worth having.
I can say nothing bad about the 229 (or Sig's for that matter)

I think it comes down to a personal preference of what fits better for you.
I like the .40 and shoot it well, some people don't though.

RTFM
