Well, just bought a new Sig 228. Took it to the range and fired about 8 magazines of ammo through it. Lots of problems. Slide failed to lock back after last round fired in magazines. Had 3 different mags and same problem on all.

Then the worst, was getting 2-3 stovepipes on each magazine. Sometimes an empty casing causing the stove pipe and other times it was a failure to feed new round proberly.

Also, seemed the ejection of the rounds was not strong at all. Just popping up about 3 inches straight up and then coming back down, so I am thinking maybe this is all a poor extractor/ejector problem??

I have extensively used sigs (226s and 220ST) in the past and have never ever had one hiccup at all! And my old company in Iraq all used Sig 226s and I don't ever remember any problems. AS far as ammo, using standard 115 gr ball, remington, from Walmart. Had bought a case and the ammo is working just fine in my Glock and HK P7.

ANy thoughts? Will take back to dealer tommorrow and have it sent back to Sig.

Wondering what kind of lube you have on the slide? New Sigs seem to like (need?) lots of oil during break in.

Also, if it were me, I'd put a few more rounds through it before going through the hassle of sending it back. The 115's might be a little weak for a new, tight pistol. How does it do with 124's or 147's?

Granted, if you want to only shoot the 115's it must function with them but maybe give it a little time?

Sig 228

Sigs are very tight when new. They need lubrication on the slide rails. Try another brand of ammo, possibly Fiocchi or S & B which should be hotter than Remington.

Did you clean your 228 before you took it to the range? New Sigs seem to ship with quite a bit of white grease, which can get a bit thick if the gun stays in inventory very long.

Did you clean your magazines before you took your 228 to the range? Two of the three new magazines for my 226ST came sealed in plastic; they were covered on the outside with nasty, gooey grease and there was also a lot on the inside.

Yes, the gun and mags were clean, no packaging grease. Sig was lubed up enough. HAve never known Sigs to have to have a break in period. Other Sigs I have had have worked right out of the box.

Ammo should not have been a problem. 115gr is standard 9mm and have used remingtons UMC yellow box ammo in Sig 226, Glock 17, Glock 19, HK p7, etc.. Sigs that I have had in the past were not ammo sensitive and ate everything I fed them. I am thinking it is some type of extractor problem.

A new gun and 3 different magazines, all cleaned before use.

"Houston... we have a problem."

The only thing other than a mechanical problem that readily comes to mind would be the recoil spring. If the recoil spring is installed backwards, the smaller end of the recoil spring trying to move along the guide rod might retard slide movement enough to cause feeding and ejection problems.

Well, clean and inspected again and again. took out firing. Not FTF or FTE this time, but still ejections are not right. Half the rounds are coming back and plinking me in the head, the other half or only making a slight arch and ejecting about a foot. And again, the slide not locking back on empty magazines (and no it is not my grip hitting the slide lock). So went back to the dealer and are sending back to Sig for fix or replacement. This is the first SIG I have ever had problems with or known to have problems with. Bummer. Well, you make 50,000 guns, there are bound to be one or 2 that dont come out right. just the natural law of production and mechanics. Still a big big SIG fan.

There may be one more thing to look at. SIG magazines are known to be very stiff, and many people, including myself have gotten the failure to lock back on the last round.

Notice how this time was lot more reliable than the previous? Might be the magazine springs. Load them to full capacity, leave it overnight... Keep shooting the gun and cycling the magazine spring. It needs to be broken in.

Well, that would solve the magazine problem. But getting half the round plinking me in the head and weak ejections, I still think it is a bum extractor problem. Anyway, was sent back to SIG, let them deterimine what is wrong.
