Sig 522 magazine wobbles

Hi all first post. I recently bought a Sig 522 rifle in 22lr caliber. I haven't shot it yet but have noticed that the magazine that came with the gun wobbles somewhat from front to back. The mag seems to stay in the well ok tho. It just seems to me for reliable operation on a mag fed weapon that the mag should stay still and not have any movement when you push on it. Anyone encountered any feed probs associated with the magazine on this rifle? Im wondering if I should call Sig and see what they say. Thanks for any help.

Most magazine fed weapons have a small tolerance which allows some play. If the magazine fit any tighter, dimensional changes from temperature, manufacturing tolerances, or accumulation of dirt would make it difficult or impossible to insert.

All the M16's I was issued had some play, my HK91 has some play, Glock 19, LCP, and Ruger 10/22 with banana mags had play. Some AR owners have discovered their particular combination of lower and magazine don't work well together. They had to either sand the magazine down - or file the mag well on the lower.

You don't want a tight fit in the mag well - it would be like the early Glock mags that actually swelled when loaded and weren't drop free when released. A tight fitting magazine would be a constant frustration plinking or at the range.

Thanks for the replies ...glad I found this site. I think the Sig 522 is known for some magazine issues. Although the Sig Sauer customer service reply was "no knowlege of a problem of this type". However It seems that there is such a great acceptance of this issue and the rifle seems to be very reliable anyway. When I finally get to the range and test it a bit . In the meantime any replies are appreciated. So many guns little time to shoot....

I just bought a SIG 522 this weekend and purchased an extra Sig brand magazine. Both had a fair amount of wobble. I'm not 100% happy with the magazines. They would occasionally fail to feed if the magazine wobbled the right way and would occassionaly not push up the next round. I took a wrap of electrical tape once around the top of the mag and ran three strips down the front of the mag. This tightened them up but I've yet go back to the range to see if it fixed the issue. If it doesn't fix it, I'll try a black dog magazine.

The three strips of electrical tape down the front of the mag and the once around the top cured the magazine issues. I took the Sig 522 to the range and used both the Sig Magazines loaded with 25 rounds each and shot the following:

* 150 - CCI Mini Mag
* 50 - CCI Velocitor
* 100 - Federal Spitfire

I emptied the mags as quick as I could pull the trigger and not a single failure to feed or eject. Also...here's a free tip...I was experiencing a bit of ghosting and aura on the $36 wal-mart tasco red dot I mounted the last time I shot the rifle. This time I was wearing my polarized sunglasses and there was zero ghosting on the red-dot.

I know this is an old topic and I apologize in advance for bringing it TTT but I had the same issue with the mag. Luckily for me, I called Sig and with no questions asked, they sent out a brand new mag to me at no charge. It still has the same amount of slop and play but hey, I got a free mag out of it and have not experienced any issues with any of the mags as it were.

It'd be interesting to remove the tape and see if the problem returns as its not uncommon for rimfire mags to have issues the first few times out until the innards get "deburred" by a little use.

Mag wobble is only an issue if it affects feeding, yours seems to, which means either over sized mag well or under sized mags. In either case SIG should fix it for you.

I have lots of guns that share magazines and if the problem doesn't move with the mag -- i.e. mag has issues in multiple guns, I conclude there is a gun issue and get it fixed.

It's an oversized mag well I'm pretty sure. The original Sig marked BD mag had plenty of slop in it. I called Sig and they sent a new one, also ordered one directly from BD. Both arrived at the same time and now I have 3 mags with plenty of slop!

As long as it feeds fine a little wobble isn't much of a problem.
