One take is that for the thousands of Sig P320's in circulation only a few fail by firing. Anyone have more details on what is supposed to be failing when they fire on their own?

There are at least 19 open lawsuits filed against Sig Sauer just in federal court across the country and us territories. All but three claim injuries from being shot by a P320. Ten of those suits involved active or retired law enforcement officers; two from the same police department in Massachusetts and two federal agents.

Sig Sauer said they fixed the problem in 2017 with a voluntary upgrade. The lawsuits claim Sig Sauer knew that their product was defective and the upgrade didn't fix the problem.

My guess is 2 things have to fail. First the sear has to fail by releasing the striker, then the firing pin safety has to fail to block the striker. Both have to fail or the gun can’t fire. The sear engagement on p320’s is very minimal and that’s the first thing I thought when I bought mine and looked at how it was designed. What I can’t wrap my head around is how the firing pin safety fails if the trigger isn’t pulled and pushing the firing pin block up and out of the way. Mind boggling.

One should note that even in the current Washington Post article describing the trials and tribulations of the SIG P-320, the Post acknowledges that many, many forensic teams, firearms experts and examiners have gone over the 320 and been unable to replicate the pistol firing in a holster or purse without something, a finger or otherwise, actually pulling the trigger.

Please note we are talking about the post drop-fire problem pistols, subsequent "upgrade" and fix
.

It would seem the pistol now functions as intended -- firing only when the trigger is pulled.

I really wish we could put a moratorium on threads on the SIG P-320 and the (alleged) issue of the pistol firing without the trigger being pulled until such time as the litigation is concluded and/or there is some clarity realized as to the technical aspects.

(And maybe some resolution as to whether or not this is simply a case of an awful lot of people who shouldn't be carrying pistols sans manual safeties trying to cover up NDs, inventing problems to join in a lawsuit, or another bandwagon effect situation perpetuated by an anti-gun law firm).

I'm pretty sure any gun widely adopted by police departments will develop a reputation for "just going off".
Possibly. But IMO some of the reports of P320s going off while in the holster are credible. We don't need another thread on this though IMO.

There's nothing to talk about while the suit remains open.
