Hey these guns have really caught my eye lately, I never thought I would like a .22 until I shot my grandpa's Ruger Mark III.. Loads of fun. I also have a thing for Sig Sauers and I want to get the best of both worlds, a mosquito. Only problem is, I am 18. Lots of people, I hear, won't sell a pistol to a person who is under 21, so what is the best way for me to acquire said gun? THanks for your help.

wannabe,

The Mosquito is somewhat of a problem. I tried very hard to like and keep mine. It is perhaps the only pistol sold under the brand that is not manufactured by Sauer in Germany or in New Hampshire. The real downside is the inconsistent reliability. For every person praising his Mosquito you will find two that curse theirs. That's probably the reason why such good looking, combat type brand-name pistol is so inexpensive. Its resale value has been low. As to how to get one legally, I am not qualified to instruct you.

The newest Mosquitos have improved reliability. Much better than the earlier versions. My newly purchased Mosquito has given perfect reliability in almost 1,000 rounds. Several different brands of ammo. I would see if its legal for you to own a handgun in your state at 18 Years old. Otherwise, I would wait.

I know for a fact that it is legal for an 18 y/o to own a handgun; I took a criminal justice class for a while and the issue was discussed on many different occasions. I have friends who are younger than 21 and own handguns as well. I just want to know if anyone has an idea of where I might obtain one.

FYI - you'll be a lot happier with a Ruger Mark III like your grandpa's than you will be with a SIG Mosquito. The Ruger is an accurate, well-made all-steel pistol that will last a lifetime. The Mosquito (which is not actually made by SIG) is a plastic and potmetal gun that is finicky with ammo, has a pretty bad trigger, and will not stand up to a high round count if you really plan to shoot a lot over the years.

Start with CCI mini mags and after a looong break-in period they can work with other makes of ammo.

My father was one of those people who had many issues with his Mosquito. The problem (as YZ noted) is it's not a Sig, it just looks like one.

Onto getting a gun... So just to be super duper clear I'm not a lawyer... But here's how I understand handgun ownership under 21 under Federal law, State law may differ so check your local laws!

You can either purchase from a private party (option A), or inherit or be gifted the handgun by someone you know (option B).

So option A, you can cruise places like armslist looking for private sellers in your area selling Mosquitos and ask them if they're willing to sell to someone under 21. I mean... What else can I say? Either they will or they won't, and if they won't then you ain't getting a gun, nothing you can do about it.

Option B, you beg a family member to buy one and gift it to you. You can't give them money to do this for you, as that would likely qualify as a straw purchase.

Option C, which you may not like... Is simply waiting until you're 21.

The Mosquito is a bit picky about what ammo it likes, and what it likes depends on the particular gun. I think it's actually made by GSG for Sig, as others have said. I like mine - bought it because it's a lot cheaper to shoot than my P-220. When I bought my Mosquito, I took it apart - completely - polished up everything and put it back together. Broke it in on CCI MiniMags, and it was pretty much trouble free. Decided to try some more economical rounds - Federal bulk gives me about 1-2 out of 10 misfeeds; Blazer is about the same; Remington Golden Bullet runs at 100% just like the MiniMags. I honestly don't think the Mosquito is any less reliable than most other .22LR handguns, but I would not trust my life to mine. It's just a butt-load of fun to shoot all day long.

As far as where to get one, I picked mine up at my local gun shop - of course, that was a good while back before things went south for pretty much everything gun related. Bud's has a good number on their website as well.

Yep, a fun plinker is all I want I am definantly thinking about going with the Ruger still if I don't find a Mosquito.

I have the mosquito to practice with since I have a 2022 it not the worst 22 I've owned but it can be picky. If I didnt own the 2022 I would have the ruger much more trouble free.

I have had my Mosquito for 6 or 7 years. I like it, and it works ok, but not great. I would not reccomend it to someone your age, as it may sour you on .22 pistols with all of the possible problems. Just buy a Ruger Mk whatever and be happy plinking for the rest of your life.

Hmm tough decision but I guess the 22/45 is cool looking.
If you're just buying one to look at, buy what looks good to you. If you're buying one to last for a lifetime of accurate shooting, get a Ruger. If you really wannabeagunsmith, you need to be very familiar with the Ruger - you'll see a lot of them that people forgot how to re-assemble....

Wannabe
The 22/45 has a polymer frame. The related Mk III is all steel. Feel the difference before you decide.

THIS. ^

If you want a more "tacti-cool" .22LR than the Mark II or 22/45, consider the Ruger SR22.

But the Mark III or 22/45 will still be a better shooter.
