Yesterday I went to the range to continue my practice with my new Remington 700 BDL .223. It was also the first time I have sighted my new Leupold Vari-X III 6.5-20X50mm Long Range M1 scope.
I arrived at the Wickenburg desert facility at 0722 just as the sun was rising. It was a 36F with a brisk intermittent breeze blowing between 5mph and 22mph. I know the exact range of temperature and wind speed because I had my weather band radio on during my entire session.
I sighted my scope for the first time at 100 yards. I have attached a photo of my sighting-in 100 yard target. I realize that it takes four clicks on this scope to move 1†at 100 yards. However, I wanted to see what each increment click would actually do. Next time out, I will be more aggressive when I sight the scope.
A friend gave me a box of his 62 grain reloads and I used seven of them to sight my scope at 100 yards. My first shot was high and to the left of center. I adjusted the scope and fired three more times. These three shots were still a bit high but centered. I adjusted the scope again and fired a fifth shot. It was still high. One last adjustment and I fired my final two shots sighting the scope.
For the remainder of the session, I aimed at different parts of the target to see if I could hit specific spots. It was satisfying to find that this rifle and scope were really excellent together. For this shooting, I used some cheap PMP 55 grain rounds.
I am quite new to shooting a rifle and found that shooting a rifle is a different experience then when I fire my 1911. First, I take much more time in between shots when I shoot the rifle. Second, I know that I concentrate more on each shot. In its own way, shooting my Remington is a more leisurely experience.
It is my hope that with each weeks practice I will become consistent and increasingly more accurate with my rifle.
Best wishes to each of you for a great Christmas.
Regards.
