I just picked up a SIG 556 hap(py birthday to meeee!) and now need to add sights. This my first rifle since the Army, I'm a handgun guy with several SIG pistols, and a knowledgeable friend suggested the Leupold 63300 prismatic tactical gunsight for glass, and I also need some recommendations on BUIS.

Have any of y'all had any experience with the Leupold? Rifle's primary use will be recreational plinking and HD if the need arises.

TIA

I don't get the fascination with the Leupold Prismatic Sight personally.

It is basically your typical 1-4x variable scope but without the magnification. You could buy a Leupold 1-4x Shotgun scope at $199 and have a more versatile sight at a fraction of the cost.

Congrats on the 556. I bought one a couple of months ago and I had the same questions as you regarding BUIS.

I went with a Samson Front Sight and Troy Rear Sight! I'm pretty happy with that combination. I hope you got the Optic Ready version, because taking off the stock front sight can be a pain in the ars. *Actually* It isn't too bad.

You mentioned the army. If you're still in Samson gives a military discount.

Also check this site out if you have ANY questions about your new rifle. It really came in handy for me.

Have fun!

Well, the Leupold arrived today. Put it together, mounted on the rifle, and I like it. I used the tallest spacer, about 6" of releif, and I really like the basic view - very bright and well defined, and quick enough on target. I like dealing with a single plane of focus. Proabably won't bother with the illumination much, it just points up quickly & well unlit. I'm 60, retired, the rifle is for fun and maybe HD, I'm not going to war (I hope).

The proof will be in he shooting, of course, but it is intersting that web reviews were either 'hate it' or 'love it', not much in between. My initial reaction is positive. So far, so good.
