Moyock North Carolina but i go to VA a lot also.
Can anyone post some pictures of some signs that deer have been in the area? I've been scouting in my woods to see where they hang out but i have no clue what I'm looking for. I'm from NE North Carolina if that makes any difference. I have my safety course next weekend and I want to start hunting the weekend after the course. This is my first year deer hunting. You guys have been a big help in getting me ready for the season.

Sorry no pics but:
Poop- Giant rabbit poop (.45 caliber to be exact :D)
Usually taste like milkduds if they are fresh.
Tracks- 2 pronged hoof

Scrapes- Torn up saplings with bark removed. Usually waist high or a little higher

Bedding- Large circles where grass is pushed down

No pics.

Walk through the leaves or a field, then turn around and see what your trail looks like. Deer leave trails as well, might just be some disrupted leaves going through the woods. Droppings. Hair. Rubbed trees. Look close enough, you can see where they nip things as they go along.

Find some oak trees, or persimmons.

If you want to find one and want confirm it, take a yard rake with you. rake a 10 ft area free of leaves, give it a few days and the tracks will be it, you should be able to tell where they come and go from.

I have cleared brush and made my own trails through the woods. I used a rake to make a trail, and before long the deer start using it as well. They still do, the old teach the young, so to speak.

find a opening in a field or a good view in the woods. Get in your tree stand or climber or just park it against a tree one evening and watch.

I've found good hunting at watering holes. Deer need about a quart and a half of water per 100lbs per day in cold weather.

After that look for food trails such as various nuts, mushrooms, non woody plants then look for farm types of crops, wild or otherwise.

Salt licks are great for attracting deer.

You will need to learn what the food and water sources are in your hunting area then scope them out.

Try to leave as little scent as possible while trail hunting.

Look for food and water sorces....like DRYHUMOR said persimmons and oaks, more specifically, in the white oak family (the acorns are sweeter), and there are a few species of bushes with berries and such. Aso, you can set up scouting cameras along deer trails to see when and where they are moving. Keep in mind the more you hunt and the more different places you hunt, the better feel you will get for how they move..............good luck

also remember that deer tracks can tell the sex of the prey. if the toes point in it is always a doe. if the toes point out and have deeper impressions on the rear then its always a buck (even baby bucks point out).

"...start hunting the weekend after the course..." Maybe. Don't know how it works in NC, but up here, you have pass the course then book a time for the written and practical test(no shooting though) given by the Provincial MNR. That time could be a several weeks after your course.

I believe that our test is at the end of the course. At least i hope it it.
