Have any of you hunted Richland Creek WMA? My kid was drawn for youth gun either sex. We are super excited. What is the terrain like? What types of vegetation is there? We are planning on going down to scout a couple weeks ahead of time, but thought I would try to get some info here first. She will be 1 of 30 youths hunting that weekend.:neener: on 13,000+ acres. I hope I get one during archery season I don't want her to get the first deer of the season in our house. I'll never hear the end of it. Oh well if she does it will be her first deer and I'll be proud.

Hunting on Richland

Although I have not hunted at Richland I have been fortunate enough to hunt Gus Engeling many times over the years. My son was drawn this year for the either sex hunt on November 22-23. My buddies and I were also drawn for the antlerless only hunt in early December.

I suggest that you use the phone number provided for Richland (903) 389-7080 and have a conversation with the on-site TPW guys. My experience has been extremely positive with those folks. They have always been friendly, extremely knowledgeable, and eager to help.

I took my first deer on Gus Engeling in 1980. My son, 9 years old, may well get his first deer there this fall. I am not certain who is more excited, him or me. Anyway, don't hesitate to talk with the TPW folks to get all the background info you need and best of luck to you both.

I've not hunted there, but have been through that area and passed by Richland Creek WMA. The terrain there is typical Eastern Texas river bottoms. The land is pretty much flat, cut with creeks and drainages. The Trinity River is there also. The land is heavily forrested with lots of briar and blackberry undergrowth.
Expect there to be LOTS of mosquitos if the weather is warm. As it is rather swampy, there is a considerable number of feral hogs in the area. Hope you have a good hunt.:)
