Last deer season my mom decided that she wanted to harvest a deer. Within the last couple of days of the end of the season that is, and she wanted to know if any of the rifles at home would do for her to take a deer with.

Now Mom lives in Alabama, and I live in North Carolina. I didn't have any rifles there suitable for a 78 year old mom to gather up a whitetail with- they are all here with me.

So for her birthday in February this year I presented her with a nice new NEF single shot in .30-30, outfitted with a youth length stock and a Limbsaver recoil pad, plus a decent low power variable scope and three boxes of ammo. She's been hunting almost every weekend since deer season opened this year and the first thing she wants to talk about every time I call are the deer she has seen from any one of several deer stands close to her house. She is more excited about this than I would have ever imagined- I don't know how she will react if she actually gets a shot at a buck and connects. I thought I was just humoring her, getting her the rifle and setting it up for her, but she is really serious about this.

Never rule out anyone as a potential hunter- you never can tell when the bug will bite. I am as astonished by this as anyone in my family but everyone is enjoying her having such a good time. I'm really looking forward to spending several days at home during the Christmas holidays. My wife collected her first buck there a couple of Christmases ago with her wedding-present Winchester Model 70 in .243- it would be neat for my mom to get her first one too.

Good luck to your mother...

I'm still trying to bag my first deer, too. She'll probably get hers before I get mine.

I have three words:

Hooray For Mom!

O.K., I lied. More than three. Good for Mom looking for new interests and hobbies, good for you not underestimating her interest.

Well, my AUNT the deer hunter...

This past Saturday afternoon my mom and her hunting partner, my 70 year old aunt, were out sitting in one of their favorite deer stands. A spike buck appeared in the food plot downrange about 75 yards after they had been in the stand less than an hour.

They had carried only one rifle between them, my mom's birthday .30-30. They discussed harvesting the deer and my aunt decided she wanted to shoot it. She placed a 150 gr. roundnose from a Remington factory load in the buck's ribs behind the foreleg on a broadside shot. The deer made it to the bottom of the hill and went down for keeps.

My cousin, hunting from another stand, heard the shot and came to investigate. He retrieved the electric golf cart, field-dressed his mom's first deer and dragged it to the road so he could get it and the excited hunters home, where the deer was skinned and prepared for the freezer.

I wish I had been there....

Excellent !!! They'll be talking about that for years to come .

Spooky...

I guess I beat your Mom by a few hours; I shot my first deer--a little spike buck, no less--Friday evening.

Small world, and good for your Mom!

i used to have a news article about two women (sisters) who were of creek Indian decent who both in their 80's still hunted deer with bows if i can find it i will post it but it's gonna take some digging.

Bravo for your aunt for harvesting and your mother for having that pioneer spirit.
