Question for those in the pro- or 'already have one' crowd (I am trying to figure the cost verses benefit):

Do you still wear hearing protection when shooting?
How much shooting do you do (cost per shot of suppressor/license)?
Do you shoot at ranges (or on private property) where hearing protection is optional?
I have seen suppressed hunting rifles (44 mag) for feral pig hunts so I suppose there is some hunting that allows suppressors?
I use hearing protection when I shoot targets.
100-200 shots each session.
With a finnish supressor that is designed for MG shooting it will probarly last a lifetime with my user.
No hearing protection during hunting or shooting with suppressed 22lr.

Do you still wear hearing protection when shooting?

Depends. Not for .22s, or when shooting .45s wet. For suppressed .223 I wear custom molded in ear plugs but not the big over the ear ones. For non suppressed shooting I double up with in ear and over ear.

How much shooting do you do (cost per shot of suppressor/license)?

My .22 suppressor probably has ~8-10,000 rounds through it. .45 is probably closer to 1500. No guess on the .223, I shoot the gun a lot but not always suppressed.

Do you shoot at ranges (or on private property) where hearing protection is optional?
I shoot at a private club, and on private property when I get the chance. Hearing protection is required at the private club, but when I'm the only one there my suppressor is hearing protection.

Every gun I own would have one, instead of just some :)

Not with the one's I've used, although some larger caliber/higher velocity ones are still not hearing safe with a can.

There is no license. It's a one time $200 stamp the government issues for each suppressor/owner. Most suppressors have a very long lifespan and are rebuildable if you do manage to wear it out.
Do you shoot at ranges (or on private property) where hearing protection is optional?
Yes (private property), although I've never been to a range where everybody is using a suppressor so I'd still wear some.

In my state it is not illegal to hunt with a suppressor

I was temped to go through the process for a 22 supreeor and backed out after see how different they changed the impact point when it is on and off. Would like to have one so i can play at home and not rile up the nieghbores . Just to much change in POI

yes I would use silencers to keep the neighbors happy. If POI changes I would adjust scope accordingly. If POI randomly changes with silencer on, I would remove. consistency is what counts for me

If POI randomly changes you are probably getting baffle strikes. My 22 can changes the POI about 1/4" at 30yds (still puts them all in the same hole though, just a slight POI shift). I just leave the scope sighted in for the suppressor since I usually shoot it with the can on.

Since you guys pay tax and have to do paperwork for each supressor a modular one would be a great choice.

ATF considers having a spare baffle stack by itself to be the same as having a whole separate suppressor, so I am guessing they would consider a modular suppressor with two modules to be two suppressors.

Yes, 99% of the time. Though I occasionally take it off just to see what it sounds like in some environments.

How much shooting do you do (cost per shot of suppressor/license)?

Probably 200-300 rounds per trip, though my shooting is much more rare these days than I'd like. The Ops Inc. 16th Model .223 suppressor I purchased is warrantied to 30,000 rounds with no cleaning or maintenance necessary. So with the cost of the suppressor and tax stamp, it adds about $0.03 per round to the cost of shooting (assuming no baffle strikes, etc.)

Yes.

Yes, in Texas suppressors can be used to hunt nuisance animals/varmints (including feral pigs). They are not legal for game animals here currently, though there is no real good policy reason for the prohibition.

I do, even with the paperwork. I have competed with suppressed long-range rifles in field competition since 2005. In 2008, two other guys with similar interests and I started a company with this as our primary initial market. Here are a few:

Legal to Hunt in Tennessee and Arkansas

Suppressors are legal to use when hunting in Tennessee and Arkansas. It is a smart idea, if you can afford one, to buy one for hunting to protect your hearing when hunting. It is tough to wear hearing muffs/plugs because you can't hear deer, rabbits, or squirrels moving. You have to put them in or on before you shoot. A suppressor solves that problem and cuts down on noise damage to your hearing, especially with a centerfire rifle when deer hunting. I try to protect my ears in some fashion when hunting. I only have one set of ears and when your hearing is gone it is gone for good.

Yes. I'd like to have one for literally ALL of my guns. Well, not the 45-70. My Ruger MKII, Glocks, and the shootgun even.
