Silly Security Measures

So I have to take my son to the Children's Hospital here in Richmond every week for feeding therapy. Since the Terrorism threat label has been raised, they have had extra security. We now have to sign in as we enter the building. No problem there. So I ask the guy as I'm entering the building the other day "So, what do you do if a terrorist enters the building?"

"I call the cops".

"What? You mean you aren't armed???"

"Heck, no. You can't have guns around kids. Plus, I'm just not paid to deal with that stuff".

So what is the point of the extra security there? I can't find one. Oh, and it's funny 'cause they wanted to put a sticker on my kid when we got back to the therapy room. I didn't want to 'cause my son (being 2) tends to pull stickers off and eat them, and I didn't want to deal with that. They told me that if I didn't, Security might not let me leave with my son. I thought "I'd like to see someone try and stop me from leaving with my son"

Whadya think??? I have thought about writing a letter to the hospital administrator or maybe going to see him and ask him why the security guards are not armed, and what good he thinks security is doing anyway?

I would say write the letter. Do not write it to say "You are idiots." Give them specific ways that they could improve their ways. Supposing that adding security is an imporovement.

I know what you mean about them trying to stop you from leaving with your son. I take care of my best friend's two-year old son all the time, and I find myself being VERY protective of him. I have gotten comments before because I look nothing like him. People asking me if I am his father and if I should have him. They touch either of us and there will be a few problems.

ARGarrison, BINGO. Todays "security" measures are not about stopping the lawbreaker, they are about stopping the lawsuit after the fact. IOW "Hey! look, we spent x-amount of dollars on upgrading security, don't blame us!"

After we upgraded to condition ORANGE, I noticed that my local Wal-Mart and Target made a point of having their people in "security" jackets stand at the door, watching you enter and exit.

As I've found in most instances, armed and uanarmed
hospital security are only employed cuz of the
insurance underwriter's demand for them to do so!

In words of the highest paid hospital administrator
within the State of Alabama; " A good security officer's
main job is to observe and report". So,
when the gentleman told you he would call the COP'S;
he was following general order's as issued by the top
dog!

*Moral of the story is, with armed security so
many times the perp will think twice about the actions
he/she is about to committ; if they see even a 70 year
old, one arm, peg legged man with a sidearm.

You think that's silly?

BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit- our underground commuter train system) closed all their public toilets after 9/11. Lately some of the above ground stations had reopened theirs, but the downtown San Francisco ones were all still locked up.

Yesterday I noticed a message on the electronic public address signs while waiting for a train

(Paraphrased) "Due to the Orange Alert all BART restrooms are closed until further notice. We apologise for any inconvenience."

That almost made me laugh out loud. For one thing, the restrooms have been closed for 18 months, so the notice was a lie.

The other thing that made me snicker was the realization that if they had made printed signs, and I had a black sharpie, I could change one word to "incontinence" for many good laughs

I spent several years working for a security company installing alarm systems, card readers, CCTV, etc. I rapidly came to the conclusion that most businesses were far more interested in the PERCEPTION of security than in the real thing. Real security is inconvinent.

I also had many conversations with home owners regarding their brand spanking new alarm systems, and their limitations. Home owner; "Wow, I just spent an obscene amount of money on an alarm system. Now my family is safe". Me; "What are you going to do if it goes off in the middle of the night?" HO; "Well, the cops will come charging down the street to save us." Me; You realize that it'll take at least 10 minutes to get a response to an alarm around here, don't you?" HO; Really, Oh my God, whatever should I do?" Me; Saferoom, blah blah blah, Shotgun, blah blah. Cell phone, blah blah blah, dog, blah blah. The "Security consultant" (read salesman) who sold them the system would never dream of telling them such things. Most "security consultants" dont know jack about security.

It's amazing how few people ever look at 'security' with any sort of common sense.

My security system consists of two mouthy little 45 pound dogs, and three armed men who are willing to put holes in anyone who doesn't belong there.
I would trust that system over any "security system".

Some firm called my dad one time, and tried to poll him about his home security system. My dad, being the redneck that he is, replied that his security system consisted of a double barreled 12 gauge with a hair trigger.
They did not succeed in selling him a security system.

Dollars to doughnuts the explanation they give you for the stickers is something like "it's for your son's protection so a stranger can't come in and abduct a child. We won't let anyone leave with a child unless the parent's sticker matches the kid's."

Yeah, right - their unarmed "security" is going to stop a child abductor? Gimme a break.

I'll keep this thread going with my experience today at Academy Sporting Goods.

I stopped in to buy some more of those delightful $3.99 boxes of 9mm Blazers. After I told the guy behind the counter I'd take 4 boxes, he called for assistance at the gun counter. I waited about 3-4 minutes, when this bubble-headed teenaged girl comes strolling back.

"Oh boy!" says she, "Ive never done this before!"

"Great idea", I told the clerk behind the counter. "No point trusting me with boxes of ammunition, when she's available."

Up to the front register we go. About 5 yards away, Miss Einstein yells out "Hey, look...my first time carrying some ammo!" Dumb as a bag of hammers.

The temptation to tell that collective crew of nitwits that I was carrying a concealed 1911 was almost too much to bear. I just said thanks, and left. geegee

There is no consolation.

When the majority of our citizens believe that anybody (much less an unarmed security guard) is going to protect them from anything at all. . . well, we're too far down the hill here.

The folks who can't or won't be responsible for their own security will wind up as prey: hogtied, sodomized at knife point and slaughtered like livestock or maybe just re-used for a while.

For me security is: a damn fine dog who sounds off promptly; a loaded .45 ACP and/or .357 within easy reach; a fair amount of practice with both.

Makes a lot of sense for them to pay someone to be there JUST in case they need to call the cops, when you know dang well that 98% of the folks in there have a cell phone, or are within easy reach of a phone and will immediately call the cops if something happens.
A drunk hit a tree in my neighbors front yard and totalled a car (was trapped in it by a tree, spinning tires and about to blow the thing up), my mom called it in and the dispatcher just started laughing at her "your the 7th one to call that in!"
Everyone within a half mile called in a car accident. Do you really think if there was an incident INSIDE a building that NO ONE would call it in on their own!?!

Want to have real fun when buyiing ammo and they want a kid to walk you to door? Open box to (check) ammo then leave a few rds out (In your hands do NOT hide them or put them in pocket) Then hand back box and move over like looking at them in better light and start for front of store looking at watch "dang I am going to be late" They are following behind with ammo and you have half a dozen loose rds in your hand. I do stop before front of store and hand them back so they won't get into trouble.
Forgot to add it is fun to pay for ammo at sporting goods counter then you don't need a escort in some stores. If it is YOUR ammo it is no danger but if it is STORE ammo it is a threat.

Unfortunately, perception is not reality, except in the minds of those who don't know better.

Academy here in Edmond will hand you the boxes and let you walk yourself to the front counter. No escort.

If you buy a gun they will walk with you but you can carry it. I think they probably do this with many of their higher priced items to reduce theft.
