My GF has enjoyed shooting my Colt but the double heat shield handguards are not comfortable for her.

Thanks to a member here (thanks ugaarguy) I have a pair of unshielded skinny guards off of a S&W MP-15.

Took a little fitting as the front of the guards are notched differently and at the rear the channel in the guards where they lock into the barrel nut I had to widen that channel with a dremel tool.

I'm NOT using these for competition (I need that shielding) but that skinny guard make it feel downright svelte!

The handguards were still snug to get on there, but there's no movement and the look is even more XM-177 ish.

Forgot to reply to this when you first posted it. Glad you were able to make them work on your Colt. That rifle can't look right with the M4 oval handguards when you're running a fixed carry handle & the long flash hider. The XM177 look is very cool.

Doh, :banghead: meant to say removable carry handle. I saw that's what it is in the pics, but for some reason my brain made me type the default format of fixed carry handle.

I'm looking at doing a dedicated 22 AR in XM177 style including the short triangular handguards.. it will be a bit spendy though.

Interesting that you're working on a .22 LR upper. CMMG just e-mailed and charged my card the other day. These guys - http://cmmginc.secure-mall.com/item/Dedicated-.22-Barrel-and-Chamber-Adapter-w-Ball-Detent-1520 - are in their production interval now. They say that the bbl. adapter collar should work with my Ceiner Atchisson kit, since their .22 LR conversion kit is essentially identical. Since I already had the Ceiner kit on hand, and was able to get a cheap take off upper, I figured why not? Rather than mess with a conventional bbl nut, snap ring, weld spring, delta ring, FSB, handguard cap, and handguards on a blow back upper I decided to go with a simple free float tube. I'll start a new thread with pics once everything gets here, and I get it all assembled.

Model 1 sales wants a LOT for a 16 inch 22 barrel (add a DPMS slipover for the XM look without losing velocity) removeable carry handle and triangle guards.. but I think it will make for one smart looking little rifle kit.

Just a follow up, without the heat shields that front sight base gets HOT.

It was a neat experiment but my M-4 hand guards are going back on it.
