The latest issue of "The Backwoodsman" magazine has an interesting article detailing how to make a simple percussion "underhammer" pistol with only two moving parts: the trigger, and the mainspring/hammer combination. Pretty ingenious in its simplicity!

Dutchman,

Saw the same artical. Wish I had more metal working skills as Backwoodsman regularly has little blackpowder gun projects in it. Wish he'd publish one for us guys lacking the tools and skills to thread breach plugs and the like.

Sounds like a great article, but I don't have access to that magazine, I've never heard of it. Where can I read that article?

Backwoodsman does not have an online version. You can purchase a subscription either from their web site (Google The Backwoodsman Magazine) or Amazon.com. The web site also has back issues and articles for sale.

It sort of reminds me of a shotgun I saw in the latest edition of "Flayderman's Guide to Antique American Firearms", except that the antique one looked like you had to cock it first (engage the trigger manually). The spring bar that acted as the hammer was extended back farther and curved to act as a crude (and not very effective-looking) trigger guard. I suppose the same thing could be done with the "Backwoodsman" gun, with a bit better results as the trigger is a sort of "double action". Hmmm...I wonder how good of a blackpowder shotgun barrel hydraulic tubing would make...?

Check with your local hardware store for the tap to thread the barrel for the plug. Any machine shop should be able to turn out the plug itself pretty cheaply with the info from the tap you used, and how long you want it.
