What 20 gauge shotgun would anyone recommend for youth ages 11-18 to use to shoot skeet? This purchase will be for a youth organization. We will purchase 5-6 shotguns of the same make and model. In my local area, the Remington 870 has been highly recommended. Is there a better gun for similar cost?

im going to try out a stoger 20 SXS tomorrow (Friday)
i have a CZ o/u 20
and a 311 410
if stoger does good it would be an inexpensive gun. i picked this one up for $250, i think list is $399 but some dealers will sell for less.

I would recommend 12 gauges with light loads, but since you want 20 gauge - the Remington 1100 has enough mass and a gas action to help mitigate recoil enough for most folks

Skeet is a two shot game so no pumps or single shots. While many people successfully shoot skeet with pumps a new shooter has a lot to think about without having to remember to pump the gun after each shot.

In your age range you could be dealing with shooters of varying sizes. A slight 11 year old and a mature 18 year old are two very different people.

If you are going to buy 5 or 6 shotguns I'd suggest looking at the Remington 1100and Beretta 391 because both companies have 20 gauge youth models and full-sized models. Get some of each. This way you have guns of different sizes to match the size of the shooter.

Both guns will be more expensive than an 870 and the Beretta 391 will be pricier than the 1100 but in my experience the Beretta is a more reliable gun. I'd also be tempted to approach a large dealer and see if you can work a discount with them because it's a bulk purchase and for a youth group. Perhaps you could do some advertising/promotion for them in return.

Best choice is either the Beretta 391 or the Remington 1100. The 391 will win out on reliability, the 1100 will win on price. Don't bother with the cheap imports, they will be out of service more than they are shot. Both the 391 and 1100 have readily available parts and service, both can be field stripped and cleaned by a 10 year old. Both will limit the amount of felt recoil. Most importanly, both have been proven as skeet guns over the years.

For either one, cut a dowell rod to limit the magazine tube to hold only one shell, that way, when done on a skeet station there is less risk of a third shell having been loaded by accident.

Beretta 391 20 gauge is a sweet little shotgun. Easily worth the extra money over the Remington. If you can get a sweet deal on a Remington, sure go for it.

Beretta has in the past made guns available at discounts for youth shooting programs. You might want to check into that.

1100 will work swell.

Definately go with a gas operated semi-auto. I love, own and shoot more o/u's than most people get to see, but youngins need something to spread out the recoil and semi's do that well. I'm kinda like oneouncer, I would recommend an 1100 in a youth model. The 870 will work but the kids will take more of a beating.

The 870 is a -fine- shotgun, and I -have- shot skeet with mine, but it's going to make the doubles -very- difficult. New shooters are likely going to "pump da hell outta 'em", if you know what I mean. I see many short strokes and jams in your future.

You -really- need to move up to a semi-auto or O/U for skeet.

Trap .... now that is another story ...
