Took the SKS out last weekend and fired about 80 rounds through it. I was bemoaning my lousy (even for me) shooting at 100 yards and a fella came over and said that I should try moving the gas "switch" to the grenade position so that it fired as a single shot and see if it would make it more consistent.

It worked as far as accuracy....put three rounds through the same ragged hole at 100 yards.

Trouble is.....when I went to switch it back to its normal position, it wouldn't budge. I figured "no big deal" I just fouled up the mechanism with carbon and will clean it up when I get home.

Here I am after an hour of soaking, scrubbing and cursing and no go.

The button depresses, it will slide to the rear, but it will not go down to its normal position.

Help!

Wow. Just spent 10 minutes looking at mine and the only thing I can think of is that there is something wrong with the button spring.

Push the button as far as it will go toward the muzzle. Now remove your gas tube. With your gas tube removed push the button toward the rear (butt) not quite all the way. In this position your button should lift up and out. Watch out for the spring under the button. With your gas tube and button removed the part that your button went into should come out(pull toward butt). If it comes apart this far you should be able to figure out what is wrong.

I had the button on the rear (towards the butt) position and let it soak in Shooters Choice. I tried getting it to pop out with no success.

So, I just let it soak a while longer and then cleaned all of the solvent out.

It still wouldn't move under thumb pressure, so I "ahem" encouraged it with a raw hide mallet and it went right back into position.

I'll have to make it a point to give this area more attention each time I clean the gun.

Thanks for the help!
