SKS home defense

I've never had the urge to modify any of the three SKS's that I have. They seem to be best if just left "un-Bubba'd, (at least from what I've seen over the years). But I will confess to a small change on one of them, (a Norinco ) and that was just replacing the front sight blade with a high visibility plastic unit that just screws on in place of the old one. Tapco makes them as item # SKS6604 and it comes with 4 or 5 different color sights. That Norinco also has an unmodified trigger assembly with a 5 lb., 14 oz. trigger pull as measured by a Lyman digital trigger pull gauge. It's not bad for something like that. Wouldn't hesitate to use it in a home defense situation just the way it is.

I really don't regret putting the detachable mag on my Norinco. They have worked perfectly and there are 30 rounds available with a big mag in. I have 20 round mags and a 15 round mag also. The 15 doesn't extend a hole lot more than the original 10 round mag did. I've even thought about going back though. But I like having the choice of how big of a mag to carry on the rifle. Stripper clips do feed quickly though. They both have their good and bad points.

The "Holy Grail" of SKS for me would be to find one of the older Norinco's that was built to accept off the shelf AK magazines.
Unfortunately you don't see those anymore.

Who gets the nod for the nicest aftermarket synthetic stock ? Tapco? ATI?

The SKS does a good job in that role

I had one for several years.... Did the bubba thing.....

I was able to get 2.5 MOA, which I thought was good from a surplus gun

The gun NEVER misfired

I actually liked the feel of the SKS over the AK

At the end of the day, I moved to the AR platform, and havent looked back

Considering the standard for HD for a LOOOOOONG time was, and for many people (myself included) still is a 12ga. riot gun with roughly a 5-6 shot capacity, I wouldn't feel limited with a standard 10round internal mag.
If i were using an SKS for HD, I'd probably load it with Hornady SST or similar, and call it good.

There was a time, when I was a poor student in law school, when the best long gun I had for HD was a Yugo 59/66. Long, heavy, and capacity limited. Thankfully, its efficacy was never put to the test, but I felt confident it would do the job if called upon, and i feel confident now that it still would if I didn't have better already.

Does the barrel have the bayonet lug? If not, it was not Bubba but the importer who removed it.

Well, the lug is missing on mine, but I'm the one that cut it off. Its only purpose seemed to be grabbing every piece of brush I passed when still hunting heavy cover.

As to leaving it stock, the Norinco stocks are made for 10 year old boys. I needed a man sized stock on mine. I'm a six footer, not 4 ft 8".

Signed....

McG,

Only mod I made on an SKS was one of those hard ish rubber but pads that simply screws on over the original steel plate and adds and inch and a 1/4 or so to the pull. Kid or small woman using it? I just removed the rubber baby buggy bumper. Only after market mag I tried on it was a five rounder in the hoped of better stream lining and that lasted one outing, worked, I just did not see it was that much more convenient than a standard 10 rounder and my state has no magazine restrictions even hunting, or did not when I did so.
