So I am thinking about getting an SKS 7.62X39mm.

What do you guys think? Is it worth it. And what do you guys like and don't like about this particular gun?

Go for it!

I bought mine last week and have had a lot of fun with it. Shoots well, easy to clean.

You didn't state which model/country SKS but I will assume Yugo even though they are all good. I would get one while you can. The prices are climbing and supposedly the Yugos are drying up.

IMO the SKS is more accurate than the AK.

How about the China SKS? They are a lot easier to find, but I am wondering if I should wait and search a little bit more to find the Yugo.

I had a Chinese SKS, and I'd definitely go with the Yugo. Admittedly, one is a small sample size, but mine was horribly inaccurate. Think paper plate at 25 yards, with either scope or iron sights. It may have just been a bad example, but I wouldn't try another Chinese. Of course, it never failed with any ammo I fed it, it's still an SKS.

Overall, the Yugo's seem have a better rep for accuracy than the Chinese. YMMV.

I've got two and I love them. One has been "bubba'd" as some here would call it. (bubbaing is a semi-derogatory term used to describe a weapon that has been modified away from it's original configuration, some of them truly deserve the term) I like them because as far as I know they are one of two guns in the world that can take either detachable magazines or stripper clips (the other is the M14). The big issue with them is that most people don't clean them out when they first get them and the cosmoline (a type of protective grease) they were packed in can jam up the firing pin and lead to a "slamfire" where the gun goes uncontrollably full auto. Not a problem at all if the carbine is cleaned properly before shooting. Makes a good gun for hunting whitetail deer and is man accurate out to about 400 yards. Some of the other members here as well as myself have gotten pretty good groups with handloads, but average accuracy with off the shelf non-premium ammo is a two inch group at one hundred yards.

a friend of mine has a Yugo one. its fun to shoot dummy grenades across the yard with, and is very reliable.

My first real caliber (bigger than .22) gun and I have fallen in love with it ever since. I think its the simplicity and reliability. All around a GREAT firearm.

I have two, a yugo 59/66 and a chinese type 56. I got deals on both compared to today's prices. They are fun to blaze away with and are one of the simplest designs out there. My yugo is pretty accurate for it being a yugo, i got groups you could cover with a quater at 25 yards.

defently go for it! i love my norinco SKS great shooter, very nice for a surplus rifle!

Thanks everyone for your comments....
I just went to my local gun store and found three different SKS's for $299
two of them were Yugos but they had this collapsable sight for grenade launching and the muzzle was shaped like for an attachment for a grenade launcher. The other one was I believe a China one with no thrills but its bayonet was this round plug type while the two Yugos were knife shaped. I don't know if I want this collapsable sight thing that i can't use and might me a hindrance later on and might break off with hard handling. What do you guys think? One, is the price reasonable for an SKS and two, what do you think i should get the Yugo with this attachment "stuff" or the China one?

If the Chinese SKS is made by factory 26 (stylized 26 inside a triangle) and the serial numbers match, I'd buy it before the Yugos.

Then again, I'd probably get the best of the Yugos too. You can never have enough SKSs.

An SKS is worth it.
If I had been smart I would have bought two of them and a lot of ammo when I had money.
I'd prefer one that isn't a Yugo just because the others have chrome lined bores and no funky gas valve to get screwed up.

Nooo it doesn't come in operator grey, or multi cam.

All kidding aside it's a great gun. That is what I started out with until I moved to the AK. Then I moved to the AR, then to the M1A, and back to the AK.

Of all the guns I have sold, I always kept that old norinco sks. I am positive you will enjoy it, and the Yugo's I have shot are very nice you won't be sorry with one of those.

Don’t worry about it – you can ignore the g-launcher equipment, it’s very sturdy and in no way a hindrance.

I'd prefer one that isn't a Yugo just because the others have chrome lined bores and no funky gas valve to get screwed up.

Also not to worry – you’ll wear out long before the Yugo’s barrel does. As for the gas valve, if you leave it alone and don’t play with it it’s will be fine.

My Yugo and Russian pictured below.

Both have been equally reliable and accurate.

Any special reason? I have such a rifle, in case you ask.

What's it for?

Mine for SHTF. Haven't shot it in years. Not really tempted to pimp-tacticalize it.

They are worth the money they go for. My yugo's are heavy, but are very reliable, and fun/cheap to shoot.

They aren't the most accurate, but good enough. I have been able to hit 12ga. shells at 40 yards...just a few in a row, but I did it.
