my pop loves his Sks, however he can't see for crap anymore, he absolutely needs as scope to hit anything, happens to us all i guess.

I would like to get him set up for christmas. Right now i'm looking at the scout scopes mount http://scoutscopes.com/ and something like a simmons pro hunter pistol scope in a 4x32 to top it off. it's roughly 11.5 " from eye to where the scope should be, and that falls into that eye relief.

Anyone have any experience with a similar setup, specifically that mount, it replaces the rear sight.

Thanks.

I have no experiance with that mount, but i do have a Choate mount for mine. It might require help from a smith. It requires notching of the stock, and 4 holes to be drilled and tapped. It is the most stable scope mount i have seen for an SKS. You will need a short scope or a shell deflector to protect a standard scope. Of course YMMV.

A scout type scope setup is about the best way to scope an SKS. The only other way that works is a side mount where you have to drill holes in the side of the receiver. Replacing the rear sight with a scope mount seems to work for people when combined with a scout scope. The only thing is a scout scope is usually big on the back end with lots of glass to get dinged by ejected brass. I would suggest taking your question over to the SKS board.

+1 on the scout scope

I know its chinese, but the pistolero from NCstar is a good matchup for the SKS and has ample eye relief.

Before I sold my SKS to have more time to play with my other toys, I had that setup

Wont make it an 1 moa gun, but does well

I'm pretty much set on the scout scope mount, and the simmons scope for pop, my question now is which rings should i get for him? suggestions?

Thanks
PK

I bought the scout scope, sks kit, the simmons pro hunter 4x32 handgun scope, it should have enough eye relief and at 9" compact enough to fit. Settled on weaver 4 screw medium heigth rings. Debating on wether or not to put it together for him and give it to him, all hooked up for christmas, or give him the pieces.

I had a bolt over the dust cover mount and a case deflector. Still have it, worked great, shot a deer with it. But, I figured the thing made a better truck gun than a hunting rifle, so I took it off. I'm 60 and can still use the irons, but I understand your dad's problem, trust me. :D

The scout scope sounds like a better deal 'cause it'll allow him to strip the gun for cleaning without removing the scope mount and it does allow for stripper clip use. If I decide to go back with a scope on that gun, I might look in to that set up. I ain't usin' anything with "Simmons" on it, though. Got burned by one and ain't buyin' another.

I have a really good scope with "Simmons" on it. Not all of those are great scopes though. Mine has halfway decent glass and it holds zero really well. I actually have it on my best rifle even though I have much more expensive scopes on other rifles. I almost replaced it when I realized that it wasn't clear enough to see holes at 100 yards from .223 rounds. It's no target scope. I would like to replace it but it will work well enough that I can hit small targets at 500 yards. That's actually much easier than seeing small bullet holes at 100 yards.

Not all Simmons scope are created equal. The older Simmons scopes that were made in the Philippines scopes were very high quality, whereas the new Chinese scopes are not manufactured to the same standards. That being said, I have a made in china Simmons prohunter 4x32 pistol scope on a scout scoped M/N M44 that has held zero for ~400 rounds. I attribute the scopes durability more to the quality (and solidness) of the scope mount (S&K) and the simplicity of a fixed power scope than to the quality of it's manufacture;)
