Howdy folks,
I know this question is kind of like saying "Hey, I just made a nice poop. What kind of polish should I use to make it look like gold." Bear with me.
I'm thinking about putting some optics on my Yugo SKS. I've heard receiver mounting is a waste of time because you lose your zero every time you clean it. I don't want to do anything permanent to it either. I don't anticipate shooting 1/1847563749569 MOA, just minute of coyote or minute of plate.

THR Can you help me polish my turd?

If you don't want to make any permanent alterations, then you really only have two options. You can use a receiver mount or a scout mount attached to the rear sight.

Personally, I would use neither. I think your best bet is probably a Tech Sights peep sight. If you have to have a scope, I'd go with a mount that attaches to the receiver. I think Choate is supposed to make a good one.

I have a Choate mount on my YUGO SKS its rock solid,I use the Millet High Angle-Loc rings and a Bushnell 3 x 9 x 32. I can't use stripper clips but its easy to load by hand or use a Tapco 5 or 20 Rd detachable mag with.

I've got the Millet rear sight mount on mine and highly recommend them, a red dot works really well with this setup. For me, it's much faster and easier to use. I'd stay away from the rear cover mounts, although a few people have gotten them to work they don't seem to be very reliable.

I had a receiver cover mounted scope on my Russian sks for a while and had no issues with zero. However, the mount was screwed into the receicer cover real well (The mount I had came with a second cover, so I didnt have to alter the original, otherwise I wouldn't do it to a collectable one like an early Russian), and the new cover, as well as the original are REALLY tight fitting, so I was very possibly just kinda lucky. Mine is pretty accurate for an SKS to begin with, and the scope helped me milk all it had much easier, but my results seem to be VERY atypical from what I hear from others who used a receiver cover mount, so.....YMMV

And so the milsurp lovers and purists dont get all excited, itwas my dad who put the scope on a 100% mint condition 1954 Izzy, not me. I was the one who took it off :neener: (even though it worked great), as It is just WAY to sweet in every respect to not be all original IMHO.

I used a Choate, but cut it down so I could use a compact scope. I didn't want to use a shell deflector. It works great.
