SKS vs AK47

Man, that thread reminds me of why I quit going to Arfcom. Too many people with too many fantasies about the end of the world. It's one thing to be prepared, but over there it's an obsession.

Yeah - it's fun to speculate, but not when it becomes an obsession. Truth is, nobody knows what will happen, so the best you can (and should do) is just cover your bases and go from there.

are they close to equal in situations like, fighting bad guys, or zombies from the underwolrd, robots from japan those kinds of thing?

Well, a lot of responses seem to have forgotten the original post. In the situation given, there is no way I would choose an sks over an ak. Since reliability isn't an issue, ammo capacity and speed of reloading alone would dictate the ak.

My son and I this past weekend took two ak's with iron sights out gopher shooting. What a blast. If the small little gophers are no problem, then fighting bad guys will be easy.

Got both also - AK no doubt -mags are cheaper.
SKS, no mags required :D
I like my sks just fine, with the price of ammo, shooting up a mag of AK ammo is about $7.50, so the internal mag doesn't give me as much guilt....

It depends on what you want. I personally think the feel of the SKS is worlds better than the AK. Something about the stamped receiver feels toy cheap. I don't really have a need to shoot more than 10 rounds at a time so the hicap mags don't mean much to me. I like the SKS sights better and like the aftermarket sights for the SKS even more.

If you want detachable mags you can get them with the SKS but you have to replace a lot of parts to stay legal. If I were going to go with larger mags I would go AK since they are cheap, widely available, and don't require all the rifle mods to be legal. They are two different rifles that are meant for two different uses. I can justify the use of the SKS a bit more than I can the AK. Both are extremely fun rifles. I have nothing against either. After shooting both I just like the SKS more. Something about the stripper clips, a machined receiver, and a wood stock brings visions of "the good old days" to mind when I use it that the AK doesn't. Beyond that I don't have much love/hate for one more than the other.

I have a Bulgarian AK 47, and 2 SKS Rifles: Chinese and Albanian. The Albanian one doesn't get shot much (twice in the last 3 years).

Both go bang reliably, but I prefer the AK-47 simply due to the higher magazine capacity. Will I hunt with it? Probably not. I like the fact that I can take 6 mags, toss 'em in a duffle bag and be ready to roll. With the stripper clips, I find them annoying. Still, I like being able to load one round at a time with the SKS.

I'd have gotten the SKS if it was going to be a range or hunting gun. They feel a little better in my hand.

But I grabbed and am in the midst of converting a Saiga because I want an EBR/bug-out gun before they possibly go illegal. I'm not big on the buttstock of it, but this thing is much more solid feeling than any other AK I've held. Snap-On compared to stuff from the tool tent.

I agree. Also, the stock and skinny handgrip feel all wrong.

It's like people don't even hear you when you say SKS's will work with detachable mags.

Well, what about the detachable mag model SKSs? Yay or nay? Are they reliable?

Its not that they don't work but that for the vast majority of them you need to replace a bunch of parts with US made parts or it will be a felony. Using detachable mags is easy and cheap. Doing it legally is as expensive as going with an AK.

They are already for sale at the gunstore with detachable magazines for about 3/5ths the price of an AK. Are they reliable or not?

Do you like apples or oranges?

I like oranges. And by oranges, I mean the AK. They may shoot the same round but they are vastly different weapons.

Not that hard, Tarvis. Yugo SKS are running $270-$300 nowadays. Add $80 worth of parts to that you're looking in the realm of $360 or so.
A Wasr-10 AK can be had for $380ish with a few mags. *

Pretty similar in price range, if not exact.

* SKS price and WASR price both pulled from J&G Sales. Centerfire Systems runs a bit less in the SKS range, about $225, so that would net you less overall, provided all you want is an SKS with detachable mags. As soon as you start trying to add optics, pistol grip stocks, etc it gets to be in AK price range realm.

I prefer the SKS. The AK-xx just felt a bit "odd", and I was not comfortable with the controls.
