Slide action or lever

Well, Remington makes the 7600 in .273 and 30.06. I understand they are based on the 870 shotgun, so would be very reliable I would think. As for levers? I have no experience at all.

Actually I'm just looking for some general views vis a vis lever vs slide action.

I much prefer a lever, but it generally limits you to shorter range cartridges (30-30, 35Rem., .45-70, et al). There are a couple exceptions to this rule, but I don't believe that there are any spitzer firing lever action rifles that are currently in production.

:)

Check out the Marlin .338 Express.
I think you might find it will give you the performance you might be looking for.

Savage 99 in .300 Savage, .303, or .250-3000. I have a friend that has seven different ones in the .250. Taken lots of Texas deer

If I found a really good deal on a .300, I'd probably get it, though I have absolutely no use for one. They're just that cool.

Wow, that's a tough, but fun, choice.

The 760/7600 series has a great reputation for surprising accuracy and they're lightning fast to operate. A friend of mine who's a wildlife officer considers a 760 pump with an 18" barrel and a 10-shot detachable magazine to be his perfect duty gun. Several different chamberings available -- mostly in the .30-'06 range so you could take a pretty long shot if you needed to. Or, for something just a little different, the 7615 is like the ultimate sleeper tactical rifle -- a .223 that takes AR-15/M-16 magazines. Used to be those were common patrol rifles for lots of sheriffs and police forces before they all got M-16s/M-4s. I've seen them used for right around $400 at some of the shops around here. Fun gun, if you're a fan of the little caliber.

Lever guns are awesome, too, though. I started out with a beautiful Win '94, but I've come to prefer the Marlins for strength and just a more solid design. And they're just rediculously accurate as well. My (son's) 336 in .35 Rem will shoot at least 5 different hand loads, from 180 gr. to 220 gr., into a 1.5" group at 100 yds.

Hard to go wrong!

A direct comparison would be
Browning lever action vs Remington pump action in .243,.308, 30-06 or .270
or lever vs pump in .22LR
or lever vs pump shotguns.

I have a marlin lever in 30-30 and a remington pump in .223. They are different calibers and different platforms so it's not easy to compare. The Marlin is easier to clean. The Remington is more accurate. I like them both. ;)

I own both, a Marlin 336 and a Remington 7600.
As someone already said, you can get a lever action box magazine rifle capable of firing high pressure spitezer bullet cartridges (Browning BLR)

I personally find the pump action even faster than a lever and, most importantly, you do not need to reacquire your target between shots....that is a very important difference IMHO.

In a Rem 7600 you can use aftermarket extended magazines (10 and 12 rounds)

My 7600 is my hiking gun choice nowdays.

On the history channel R. Lee Ermey's Lock'n'load did a timed trial comparing bolt/lever/pump guns. I was surprised how much faster the pump guns were.

Pump 7600 is damn fast. You work the action in a straight line too, as opposed to an up-and-down motion you get from working a lever. Not knocking levers at all, but IME, it's a pump for speed hands-down.

All other factors aside, strictly from an ergonomics point of view I prefer the pump. (I have both - one in a model 12 and the other a model 94).

My ~50 year old Remington 760 chambered in .300 Savage is scary accurate and FAST. Peep sights only.

My marlin .30-30 is accurate enough and fun to shoot, but given the choice I'll grab the 760 any day.

I'll vote Rem pump, in the carbine configuration it has to be one of the fastest aside from self loaders.

If you want the most efficient hunting tool buy the pump. If you want a classic rifle that will still get the job done get the lever.

Remington Model 12?...or Winchester? If it is a .22cal Remmy, I imagine it is more ergonomic than a Winny Model 94 presumably in .30-30.

:)

I have a 7600 pump in .243. Lightning fast, low recoil, almost like shooting my AR. I can shoot almost as fast as I can pull the trigger.

The reason I got it was because I shoot lefty and it works great for that. Good accuracy.

The bolt has to move at least the length of the cartridge and a bolt action or pump action rifle seems to require less operator movement than a lever action rifle. The pump action eliminates the necessity to remove the trigger finger hand to work the action whereas the bolt and lever usually require it.

The old Winchester Mod 88 probably had the shortest lever throw of any of the lever action rifles and it was available in .308 which was far superior to the older Winchester chamberings.. Savage also chambered some Mod 99's in modern calibers.
